With exception to one area, I lock my skis every time I have them off my feet. As it is, my skis nearly got clipped at one area when I took my hands off of them and turned to talk to one of the kids in our school group as I was taking my lock our of my pocket. I was less than a foot away from them. The kid that tried to clip them was wearing rental boots that had to be at least a size 11 or 12 mens...I have a 9 womens. He claimed that they were his skis and was swearing at me and calling me all sorts of names as I held fast to them. A member of the areas "safety patrol" heard the commotion and came over to see if everything was all right.

The kid told him that I was trying to steal his skis. I said, they are my skis, not his. The "safety patrol" asked him where he got them. He said he rented them...the guy laughed at him and told the kid that no area rents Volkl 6*'s, are you sure you are not demoing them. The kid said, that's it, I'm demoing them. I said, they were my skis.

The "safety patrol" asked for his reciept...the kid said his mother had it. I said, I can solve this right now...put them on the ground and have him step into them...they won't fit. At that the kid said, I don't have to prove anything to you and the "safety patroller" said yes you do...The kid got all nervous and shaky...he tried to tell the guy that he just changed his boots because the buckle broke on his others so they may not fit...He was taking them to the shop to get the binding adjusted to his new boot. I said, "gee", as I clicked into the bindings"...my boot fits perfectly."

The kid's buddy yelled to him and told him his skis were in another location...the safety patrol told him he would go with him to make sure he found them ok. The kid said sorry and started to walk with the guy and then bolted away as fast as one could in ski boots.

They caught the kid at his car and upon investigation found several pair of skis in the vehicle.

I'm a kid :D Not the kind of kid who would steal your skis though so don't worry  I'm 18 and have been splitting my skis for 3 or 4 years (before that I was growing so I had POS skis that no one wanted). Locking seems like a hassle.

Lock Skis??? Ummm boot up at 8am at the car, ski 8hrs unboot back at the car at 4pm. No chance of them being stolen. Seriously though i try wrapping my little wire around everything a few times and keep in in sight thru a window just to make it more difficult so i have enough time to go out there and kick someones ass.

I always lock my skis.
It's a byproduct of growing up in NJ :D
Sue, a bolt cutter may take the lock off quickly, but I bet most thieves are looking for a quick pick. So the added delay may convince them to pick up the next set...not mine!

To be honest I locked mine up on opening day at K last Nov and I either forgot the combo or the combo chnaged itself. The brand of lock i have is famous for changing its combo. Anyways I couldn't get it open so i wnated to my car opened my tool box and grab my pilers with the wire cutter. 30 seconds later in line waiting for the gondola to open.

Yeah, I've never seperated them either for that reason.

It's much easier to do when you have a regular skiing partner like I did last year.

Then you just swap one ski and still only have to remember where one pair is. Same with poles.

I lock my skis, but they're nothing special. It would be just my luck that some punk would take them just for the heck of it and then my lift ticket would go to waste. :( I do agree with the whole soft/hard target thing though which is why I bother. I do recall our stuff being moved in the lodge one time, though. Not taken, but moved somewhere entirely different. That was rather irritating... I don't leave any valuables in the lodge, but it would suck to have to go home in my ski boots.

Now you've just asking for trouble... I think you may find that your skis get 'misplaced' at an AZ outing now... :p
