Do you own one or more condos?

I'd been waiting to jump in the last 2 years and finally bought a house 4.5 miles from Whiteface last month. Maybe I could have done better if I waited until next year (time will tell), but right now I couldn't be happier.

Big Congrats!!!

Now remember, I prefer a room with a western exposure, private bath, and my hot tub at 104-106.

My parents bought a condo in 1996 as a vacation destination for about 30k on Ascutney. They sold it last year for 110K. The only downfall was the capital gains tax but it was a good investment.

Nice,,,and amazing that condos in VT,,,even at a smaller resort like Ascutney can still be had so inexpensively..The population is rising in the northeast and unless global warming is a reality..:puke::puke::puke::idea::idea: then there should be growth in the sport and more depand for ski condos. The average house in Stowe is now over 700k,,,wow

We bought a house near Big Boulder in Pa 4 years ago. It got me on the snow for the first time since high school and I got my kids started young. We rent it a handfull of weekends during the season, only to people I know or who have been recommended. Just getting some extra cash to help pay the high heating bills is great. I couldn't be happier that I bought the place. If you are looking for strictly an investment property, look out west.

Read this thread thru not realizing how old it was...weird.

We bought near Mount Snow in Nov 2008 mostly for our use but planned to rent it to people we knew to help offset the costs. Problem was, we were there every weekend but 1 from the day we closed on it till the weekend Mount Snow closed for the season. Hell of a great time skiing.

This year, the plan was to again rent it out periodically. But two days before the ice storm hit there in Dec, the tenant next to us burst a pipe and we shared in the damage. We are STILL waiting on the repairs. Place is usable to us (partially torn up) but in no shape to rent it to others. Frustrating.

Bartlett or Bretton Woods?

I also missed the dates of the posts. We are thinking of buying a place this year and view it mostly as a lifestyle decision. Our kids are 5 and 3 and the five year old started skiing this year and loves it. We grew up in VT and have missed skiing over the past six years. This winter sure has been fun. We are trying to decide between Bartlett/North Conway area and Bretton Woods. Both take about three hours to get to; Bretton Woods is pricier with killer taxes but has shuttles or is ski-on/ski-off. Bartlett has nice low taxes and lots of things to do in the area in all seasons, lower-priced properties and choice of mountains but all require driving to the mountain. Anyone have any thoughts? I am concerned that Bretton Woods is trying to become the new playground of the rich and famous. Could be great for resales but might not fit our personalities. We've been skiing both areas this winter and really like them. We just want a mountain with enough trails to keep everyone happy and a good place to grab a meal so I don't have to cook all weekend! Thanks for the thoughts.

I would go with Bartlett. I love the ski on and ski off, but even as your kids get just a few years older (my oldest are 9 and 7), you'll find that they out grow Bretton Woods' terrain. Obviously, Bartlett means a lot more time at Attitash than Bretton Woods, but their two mountain set up will give a greater variety of skiing terrain. (And I do think Bretton Woods is trying to leverage their hotel to become a rich person playground).

Check out Jackson too. That will give you closer access to Black and Wildcat and I believe there are a few more dining options in Jackson than Bartlett - (of course, Bartlett and Jackson are both right next to Storyland - mandatory for summer visits with the wee ones).

I have had both. A condo close to the mountain and now slope side. Slope side is a totally different life style. Much more relaxing and so easy. Especially with young children. Why not consider Burke? About 15 minutes further than Bretton Woods (more highway and less secondary roads). A great mountain for skiing and very children friendly.

I'm a little different, we thought about a condo and renting it out. But we went the other way bought land and built a home, which we DO NOT rent. We are 99 miles door to door to Hunter, after 25 yrs the ride is still doable we go up about 40 weekends and many weeks a year. Be careful where you go 3 hrs now may seem fine but 15 yrs and 100's of weekends from now??

Good Luck

Funny thing about Burke...my inlaws live in Walden VT (less than 30 minutes away) and we skiied Burke a lot when it was in tough shape financially (7-8 years ago). Loved the mountain and remember my father-in-law saying condos were a steal. Not so anymore! We grew up in Vermont but there are lots of competing interests for our time when we go there (i.e., family and friends who don't ski) and it is rarely relaxing for me. Plus, with kids our age I like the idea of Storyland, Santa's Village and alpline slides close by. The hiking in the Mount Washington area is also amazing (as it is near Burke, I know). Anyway, lots to think about. Now let's see those prices keep dropping!
