If I could score an actual career out there that would be money, but I feel like those are few and hard to come by.

You can make your own career out there.

The work/money thing isn't my issue...it's having 3 kids and having to uproot them and all the understandable issues it would cause. Also on the family side are elderly parents who won't move.

It could be done, but more likely is the 10 year plan at this point.

Any rich folks out there already earned their $, so I doubt anyone is going to make it out west as a financial planner.

*Buy into a franchise and open a hotel.
*Become a fly fishing or whitewater rafting expert and open up an outdoor adventure
guiding service...this could be a backcountry skiing guide service in winter.
*I'm in the food/food equipment industry...study and learn all the facts, come up with a
unique concept, make a business plan, and open an upscale restaurant. Or open a
franchise restaurant like Starbucks or any fast food chain.

These are more likely ways to get that rich guy's $.

Haha, now how am I supposed to generate that kinda capital on a ski bums budget? Might need to take a 5 year hiatus in there and try to make the big bucks. I bet once I some experience under my belt there'd be a market for a financial planner in a place like Jackson. I heard that place is growing like crazy.

You laugh, but this is exactly where coming up with a bulletproof and original business plan comes in. Folks with money to invest like to get in on the ground floor of originality. That's where the big bucks are for the entrepreneur.

Coming up with the plan is the hard part...once you have that, getting the money is purely a matter of selling the idea and yourself.

Even though they have had some recent issues with debt and people not paying their loans, the SBA (www.sba.gov) is one of the best resources for beginning entrepreneurs - they'll help you with resources, building a business plan, and loans.

Excellent point! Where there is a will there is a way.

I guess well just have to wait and see where I end up out West, and then Ill look at my options. Right now Im really looking into Tahoe and Jackson Hole, but who knows where Ill be in a year. The more I think about it I cant really see myself settling down outside of NH long term, but it would be awesome to live out west for 5-10 years.

Impressive, as is the other TGR report posted here recently. I think what makes you "the man" is to challenge yourself while skiing within your own ability and having fun while doing so. I'll never have the skill to huck cliffs or ski couloirs like some of those guys, but I'm happy challenging myself a bit each season and improving within reasonable limits.

And thats the best way to approach this little insanity of ours. The real world is not like Aspen Extreme where you can go from a 600 vert hill to a multi thousand vert one and ski like they do. I've followed locals out west a few times..and wished that i didn't.
