About the roads in Central/South Vermont and the NY State Thruway?

What about folks trekking from different areas?

Methinks you might be stranded at the ski area of your choice because the "roads are impassable." It may take, oh, one or two days for them to become passable...better tell your employer now.

Thruway/Northway are pretty well-cleared. (Traffic will be moving slowly, and there will be lots of cars off the roads unless the road is completely dry though). RT4/149 out to the Northway has worked fine for us when we've had to drive to/from Killington in the snow.

If I were you, I'd plan to stay Sunday night. From the reports I'm hearing (unofficial), we could be looking at 1-2 feet in the valleys and 2-4 feet in the mountains up here. The ski areas are getting an awesome early Xmas present!

JwBR,
Don't let your actions be questioned...go further north, then call in late Sun. night = it was "The accident up ahead!.." and "am calling in so as to not be a surprise in the morning.."

..per Dennis Hopper in commercials..."Make Your Dreams Happen"...;-)

If there is anywhere from 3-4 feet, I plan on driving up Sunday, skiing Monday and possibly Tuesday.

Snow is scheduled to start in Central Vermont after dawn on Sunday. Check the storm path and leave really early in teh morning. Stay overnight. This is a fast moving storm and will be out by mid day Monday. I do find that often times the roads are worse (black ice, packed snow/ice) the day after the storm. Driving on snow is pretty easy- but not so easy when it packs hard with the heat of tires....

Well now I am supremely bummed/pissed, bordering on depressed.

The girlfriend and I had booked 2 nights at the Grand Summit "Hotel" at Mount Snow. We have never been there before, but due to a variety of factors (open terrain, proximity, Kmart's new ownership, etc...) we have decided to give it a shot.

Unfortunately, I work a job where I really cannot (in the boss' eyes) miss any days between Thanksgiving and New Years. After the New Year, it becomes much more lax.

Now I understand the Hotel/Mountain having a "No Refund for Cancelations" policy. This makes sense. However, the girlfriend called up asking if it were possible to move the reservation for Saturday night to a weekend night after New Years, thus allowing us to drive home after skiing tomorrow and miss the storm. She added that we would obviously book the additional Friday for the weekend we moved the Saturday reservation to, at the normal additional cost.

The Not Polite Lady at Mount Snow replied that this was not possible.

Now, I do see their side, but it seems silly. The policy they are enforcing against us will ensure that I pay for 2 nights this weekend, and never return back to Mount Snow; the alternative I am offering them guarantees that they will receive payment for 3 nights (tonight, + a Friday in January, + the Saturday I am moving) and also earn my respect for working to accomodate a customer, increasing the chance that I book even other days in the future. I would even pay a surcharge to do this, something in the $10.00-$40.00 range.

I am going to call back at lunch and outline this analysis and offer to pay the surcharge (they do normally allow this sort of thing 48 hrs in advnace for a $15.00 surcharge). What does everyone think the chances of them agreeing are?

I am thinking 1% or so.

Perhaps the most frustrating part is that I am going through all this basically in an effort to avoid what are likely going to be EPIC conditions on Sunday/Monday. This is very upsetting.

In my memory, Nor'easters are a creature of March/April, are they not? Is my memory wrong? Can anyone recall a December Nor'easter like this before?

<big sigh>

What time do you have to be at work Monday? You could always get up early Monday AM to make the drive.

Flexible that way. Anytime before ten is pretty much acceptable.

Does anyone have a guess of how the roads will be Monday morning if we were to leave at 6 am? I.e., if it stops snowing Midnight-2am or so, will it be smooth sailing (departing at 6am) on the local roads from Mt. Snow to (either) NY Thruway or US-91??
