And this is the article

So AZ should drop all plans to buy Sugarbush and should first acquire Dunkin Donuts. Folks in Boston are addicted to the stuff...

Then take over the ski world

I met with the founder of the Carlyle Group Thursday, and we talked about, among other things, the Dunkin Donuts deal. Pernod Ricard should sell it, sure, but I don't know that Carlyle et al are the best choice, based on what I took away from that meeting. Not that Blackstone's any better, but still. He seemed amazed that 1) DD sells more coffee than McD's, B) DD sells more coffee than donuts, and third, DD coffee wins is equally preffered to Starbucks. Two all three, I say, "No shiat, Sherlock."

Anyway, not the first time DD's been on the auction block. WOn't be the last, either.

he was surprised about that??? folks, time to get your money out of carlyle group stock. you need only ask any living new englander how many folks need their dunks run in the morning to survive.

btw, the margin on coffee is rediculous. not counting cups, lids, cream, etc. the margin is like 90%. DD's is instant money for who ever buys it. i can't beleive it's for sale except to shore up debts.

My hometown of Waltham has 5, including the busiest Dunkin Donuts in America. Or maybe it was most profitable. Either way, the place is a zoo. When I used to daytrip for skiing, I'd see lines in there at 4:30 am.

When I lived in Stoneham, we had 3 within about a mile. When we were looking at new houses, I would seriously scout out Dunkin Donuts if we saw a place we liked. Luckily we are within a mile of both Dunkin Donuts in the new town, even if the parking situation at both locations stink.

The problem with DD is that they have too many choices.

I want coffee from DD. JUST COFFEE. They need to enforce their COFFEE ONLY lines with a tactical SWAT team or something.

I am always stuck behind that "person" who has to pick their dozen donuts INDIVIDUALLY and concentrate on each selection or is getting a half mocha/half cappaciono,half/half/decaf with one and half/Splenda with half/half whipped cream on the top with 3 ice cubes in it. ARRRGHHHHH!!

The only difference between the lines at DD and a methadone clinic is that their is more respect at the clinic.

Now if you'll excuse me...I need my second cup this am.

All I know is that way too many New Englanders are obsessed with DD for no reason. The coffee is horrible and really weak. The bagels have a horrible consistency and well I don't really eat donuts. Personally I prefer my $5 cup of coffee at Starbucks, thank you very much.

Kind of as frustrating as wanting to pay for a gallon of milk or a tin of altoids or something with the guy in front of you spending what he just collected in cans with his shopping cart on 30 scratch tickets, taking his time to pick each one individually.

I wouldn't let it get to you that much skibum. Bad for blood pressure. Most people just aren't coffee and bagel connoisseurs like you. Most go there because they're convenient (like others have mentioned, there's one everywhere), cheap (relative to Starbucks), have drivethroughs, and a part that may be overlooked by some is they've become a New England institution.

I find their coffee decent especially if you like sugar but I usually make mine at home anyway. Living up the programmable coffee machine.

I do think it'd be a good idea for AZ to buy it though. We need a good cash cow to build up a little capital before going after SB.

And after that we could probably think about buying the entire state of Rhode Island...

I actually find their bagels to be pretty decent. I don't drink coffee so I can't comment there. I don't have donuts too often, but their's are just alright...

Here in downtown Hartford I have 4 DD to choose from. These are all within a 5 minute walk.

I have one real Starbucks and I think there are two mini ones that are open at certain times, one at the new convention center the other at the new Hilton.

There are 3 independent coffee shops, one right in front of me & kiosk they operate at Constitution Plaza (across from Channel 3's entrance), another in my building and another across the street.

So I have basically 8 full time coffe places within a 5 minute walk. This is Hartford, not Boston or NYC!

We should do a poll as to pick our favorite coffee places (chain or independent)

Dunkin Donuts is like the Bud Light of coffee...

Like sex in a canoe...

Taking a long time for them to announce who won the bid, though. It'll be interesting to see who gets in. My money's on Carlyle, though not because of Carlyle. With Bain and TH Lee involved in that consortium, they've got the homefield advantage (Baine and Lee are both based in Boston)

Well, it's official. TH Lee, Bain, and Carlyle went in together and bought it for $2.4 billion. With a B.
Thing is, price is way higher than has been average this year- 11.6x 2006 estimated EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, amortization and depreciation), versus the 2005 average of 7 or 8. Must have been a nasty auction process.
If they execute as Carlyle wants, you may soon be able to get a Dunkaccino coast to coast.
