Actually, Wildcat should be the ski area that everyone skiis. In fact, you can ski it on a powder day and forget about a Colorado trip as it is the only New England ski area IMHO that rivals those out west.
:-o with all do respect, and having never skied the west before, there are MUCH better ski areas in new england, especially if you are looking for powder. and having seen pics and read reports from out west, i would never choose wildcat over a CO vacation. though i agree, every east coaster should make a point to visit the cat at least once in their life times.

Burke -- Don't think I've ever read a negative comment about the place on this or other North East forums. Seems a place one really should go before the developers move in.
Sugarbush -- Again, one reads almost nothing but positives.
Cannon -- Think we're ready to give it a shot.
B'East -- Could be a good alternative for some day trips. Though it's a bit on the fringe of our day trip range.

Maybe this'll be the year we get to a few new places.

I love Wildcat, but also don't really agree. I've also had really bad luck with weather and conditions whenever I've gone. I've only had 1 day at the cat where conditions were really nice :(

Sugarloaf and Smuggs would be the most important ones I've never been to. Only have been to Stowe once, and it was rather late season with only some of the good trails open and with glades probably not doable, so I'd like to go back there.

Thank You, now I have to concentrate my new ski area visits to New Hampshire and Maine, although I am primarily missing the minor areas in those states. Massachusetts will be finished with this winter.

I am missing Maple Valley in Vermont, but because they are closed right now, I may have to wait awhile if ever to ski that place if it reopens.

LOL... Ski Ward. You'll be done with that in like an hour and then go to Wachusett or something... or cover Pine Ridge right then too.

Is Ski Ward that small? Blue Hill and Pine Ridge are on opposite ends of the state, so it would take a few visits to get to all of them.

The views at Wildcat on a clear day are just as superb as those at any Western resort. I've skied Telluride, Snowmass, Alta, Snowbird, Park City, Squaw Valley in Ca., and visited Jackson Hole and Sun Valley, Idaho in the winter. Unfortunately, the chances of seeing a dry powder day and a clear sunny day on the same weekend at Wildcat are rather rare. Bretton Woods has spectacular views of Mt. W, too, but they aren't as awesome as those in the Pinkham notch.

Ward wasn't small to me when I was 12, and it was my first downhill ski experience with a lift.

The only major ski area in VT I havent hit is Smuggs. Gotta do that this year.
Would also like to get down to see my friends at Crotched in Southern NH.
Also want to hit Mont Sutton again.

I was looking at the resort rankings in the recent Ski (or was it Skiing?) mag. Wildcat was ranked number 1 for scenery, not just in the East but in North America. While I think these kinds of ranking reflect readership prejudices of the magazing, and while beauty is clearly in the eye of the beholder, it certainly speaks well for the views from Wildcat.

The readership of these mags would prabably reflect better the general, dedicated ski public than the collection of regular posters here. As to powder skiing, of course you can find better powder depending on a given day or weather pattern. However, the elevations in New England aren't all that different and you can ski great powder at Wildcat. If you catch a day after an overnight dump when the sun is shining, there's nothing like it.
