Fantastic day at Elk. It started snowing shortly after we hit the Mt Pocono exit, and did not stop all day...a steady, light snowfall with the sun making a couple brief guest appearances. The snow kept surfaces fresh all day. It actually intensified in the afternoon, and conditions improved as the day went on.
Got on the hill around 9am and skied until the closing bell at 4:30 with a 15 minute lunch break of jerky and granola bars. It was crowded, relative to Elk, in that the lifts were anywhere from ski-on to a 2 minute wait. I guess between the vacation week and the snow, more people wanted to come out. It was generally more ski-on than wait though.
Conditions were fantastic, no ice. Lots of untouched cord for our first several runs with nice sugar on the trailsides. As the day went on things got chopped up, but stayed relatively soft. Rare is the day skiing in PA when you don't hear any noise on the turns. Yesterday was one of those days. Elk has 3 bump runs, only one of which I skied-Chippewa. I am not a bumper, so it is nice to have lower angle bump runs on which I can take my time and practice, with NObody around.
Run of the day was ungroomed Seneca. Soft, natural, super-fun bumps, and no traffic.
Elk has a strict 'no-woods, no out of bounds' policy, so we definitely DID not hit the trees or the lovely soft powder of the Seneca headwall.
Things I like about Elk:
-Farther away from the cities than most other PA hills, keeps crowds down.
-Reasonable rates
-No 'speed patrol'
-Friendly vibe, with no frills, so people go there to ski, and that's it
-A rinky-dink terrain park that no one uses, no half-pipe, so it's essentially a skiers hill
Drive home was a little slow as it snowed steady all the way south to Allentown. Got home to dry roads where it hadn't snowed one bit 2 hours south. Mountain magic I guess.
