MOUNTAIN FORECAST: Snow and mixed precipitation changing to rain today, clouds obscuring the summits, and winds increasing from the southeast. Clouds will be breaking across the summits Saturday morning, some sunny intervals north, and partly sunny south, turning a little cooler. The weather pattern will change over the weekend, with a chance of light snow Sunday night and Monday, and more seasonable temperatures all of next week.

The 10th and 11th of January, 1859 were among the coldest days of the 19th century. The temperature on the UVM campus on Professor Petty’s thermometer read -26 at 2 PM, and the intensity of the cold held thermometers below zero from the 8th through the 12th. The coldest reported temperatures included -40 in St. Johnsbury, and -45 in Woodstock, VT.
