For all you ski sundown reg.:

I learned to ski at ski sundown when I was three, besides the poma that is long since gone, I had always remembered a short steep trail that ran under the two triple chairs.

When I was in ski club at high school I always look for that trail. I thought I was crazy, and then just forgot about it as I haven’t been back since 01’. Then a few days ago I found it!! The trail is called “Horn” here is a link from teachski website. Now for you sundown locals is it skiable? Is it even worth it? It looks so short and small on the map. Anyways, maybe ill have to try it myself this winter,

Cheers,

I've spied that trail from the yellow lift (i guess its lift 1). It looks skiable although I have never seen anyone on it. The chairs are pretty low where that trail crosses under it. It not on the current trail map and obviously sees no snow making. There would have to be a dump for it to be skiable. From the old map it appears to hook up with Gunny. I don't recall seeing the trail cross under lift 2 and connect with Gunny.

I used to ski it when it was open. Hasnt been for years and there are some pine trees growing on it now. It would probably be skiable but to be honest its really a nothing trail. It actually has very little pitch whatsoever and was basically used as an alternate route to gunbarrel. I think they let it grow in cause it was basically useless. It does run under both triples and you can see the entrance to it at the top left corner of nor easter.

Well, on google earth at least, the cut looks clear, so you should have a good chance at it.

It is technically still ski-able, but it's no longer a trail and skiing on it is frowned upon at best. As 2knees said there really isn't much to it anyway. IIRC it was the only way over to Gunny in the original layout of the mountain (the top part wasn't there). Now it's not needed. I believe the official word is that the newer chairs are too low to the trail, but I know when I first started skiing there Horn was open with the same two triples servicing the summit. BTW, I'm pretty sure those trees that are growing on the trail were planted there to prevent people from skiing it, much like the intermediate trail that used to be skier's right of the sunnyside triple.

Right. It's pretty flat and you probably wouldn't even need to turn much on it if there was enough natural to ski it. And if there was a foot of new snow, there are much better unofficial areas to ski at Sundown!

I actually asked about the Horn in last year's challenge:

As Brian mentioned, the Horn was how you used to access Gunny.
