I was waiting to see when the first rescue would come. It is too bad that this has to happen. I know that people disappear up at Jay and once in a while in the "Exterminator Black Hole" on Sugarbush North and end up in Jerusalem, Vermont that is (but it would be cool if one would end up over in Israel :wink: That would be an expensive trip back home!)

If you don't know where you are going to end up, DON'T GO.

This incident made Channel 5 in Boston on the evening news. I don't usually watch it, but I caught it yesterday. By the way, it does snow in Jerusalem, Palestine on rare occasions. There are some interesting lift service areas in the mountains of Lebanon which are frequented by rich oil sheiks and their large families. :uzi:

Jared Rush, 22, and Michael Styer, 23, were the snowboarders. Jared Raytek and Thomas Arnold, both 23, were the skiers.

State Police Lt. Donald Patch said it was the first full-scale search for an out-of-bounds skier this winter. Patch said Monday evening that no decision has been made whether the skiers would be billed for their rescue. The cost of such a rescue is estimated at several thousand dollars.

Vermont law states that a lost person who skis out of bounds is responsible for costs incurred by a search and rescue. Typically, people who "recklessly" ski out of bounds are billed. Others who simply get lost by accident are not billed.

Depends on who makes the maps...
Any map before 1947 will show Palistine.. The UN wanted Jerusalem to be an "international zone" when the English left... After the 1967 war - the sections of the city were reunited under Israel..
In 1980 - it became law that Jerusalem was totally reunited...

I know the history

I know the modern history of Israel. And, I know that 1947 was a long time ago. This is now and Jerusalem is in Israel, not Palestine, as you wrote earlier. I also know that the U.N. intended Lebanon to be a Catholic country and it was but isn't any more, due to war and Muslim terrorism.

Interestingly enough, though, everyone maintains their embassies in Tel Aviv. I had to look it up to amke sure Tel Aviv wasn't the capital. i could have sworn it was.
And, actually, to be nitpicky, any map before 1947 will show the "British Mandate of Palestine", not Palestine. I want to say that's back until 1917 or so. Don't know what it was called before then.

I remember when Sonny Bono died and there was this big outcry for all skiers to wear helmets. Bono didn't die because he wasn't wearing a helmet--he died because he skied alone, off course and out of control. What do you expect when you break skiing's cardinal rules?

skiing out of bounds is not breaking a cardnal rule of skiing. iirc, the ski area boundary at K doesn't say it's against the rules to do so, it warns skiers against doing it and to be prepared if you do go for it. skiing OOB, imo, is actually restoring skiing to somewhat of a natural state the way it used to be - not breaking a cardinal rule (unless it's posted, but that's a ski area rule - not a cardinal rule). but being unprepared, not knowing the terrain, and not being able to self extract when you did something stupid definitely warrents a billing from S&R.

What Kind of Drugs? I ski alone, Out of Bounds all the time, but in areas I know well that are well travled. I do wear a helmet and frequently use drugs on these excursions. Am I breaking any rules? I sure hope i am. Also, I challenge that skiing off piste in the NE is getting back to nature. Chances are the "woods shot" your skiing has been cut illegally in the summer. It's really just another way that we damage our surroundings in the name of recreation. JMO.

When i got out of highschool i moved to killington. I spent 3 yrs skiing and working on the mt. Everyone talked about skiing from cooper cabin too the Mendon Rd. [cooper cabin is justoff the north ridge triple chair on the long trail] [good place for a little buzz] If they expeced tofind theseguys near the mendon rd this is probably where they started from. If you ever hike up to the cabin from the rd you will never try to ski it.First you need about 8 ft of natural snow . Second, back country skis for the last section.Killington has plenty of tree skiing for most people. I find it funny ; for lack of better word that almost all these stories i read are about non local people. If you dont know a mt like home dont go OOB. SIMPLE... I also have never skied with anyone equiped for any time in the woods.Except when that was the plan from the start. Most people dont ski well enough to even think about oob but if you can, Know the area or save your turns for a later outing

We ride pleanty of natural lines in the Catskills - gullies and ravines for instance... You just need to find the right kind of forest...

I won't even mention Tucks... wich doesnt even have many trees... Except scrub...

well of course most woods shots are cut illegally during the summer. you don't really need a 100% natural trail to "get back to nature" else all the city slickers that drive to ski on piste are essentially no closer to nature than in their cubes in the city. i am far less worried about damaging surroundings in the name of recreation than damaging our surroundings in the name of just living (i.e. urban sprawl, suburban for that matter if you've seen how southern NH is really part of northern MA except with no sales tax ).

well of course most woods shots are cut illegally during the summer. you don't really need a 100% natural trail to "get back to nature" else all the city slickers that drive to ski on piste are essentially no closer to nature than in their cubes in the city. i am far less worried about damaging surroundings in the name of recreation than damaging our surroundings in the name of just living (i.e. urban sprawl, suburban for that matter if you've seen how southern NH is really part of northern MA except with no sales tax ).
