When I mooch I only pull basic web content (forums, gmail), nothing I care about (bank information, etc), and only for short periods of time.

If someone has been kind enough to provide me with wifi (whether intentionally or unintentionally) I don't abuse it (download large files, stream content, etc) as I would consider that to be rude... anything that would interfere with the subscriber's use of the service is over the line for me.

I have an unsecured wireless router in my home and I actually set it up that way on purpose. I have this weird belief that everyone should have internet access and it should remain free (I.E. unencumbered by needless regulation). Something about the free exchange of ideas and free access to information, etc. Guess it's my more socialist side coming out but my idea is that if someone needs a connection, they can use mine.

And, speaking as someone who does that, thanks for not abusing the hospitality

Chances are, if you see me posting between 10-6 on a weekday, it's from my car somewhere in New England using the Verizon card. I have no clue how sales reps did their job as efficiently and effectively prior to the technology.

Does anyone have a conscience issue with this?

I've mooched a few times, once at a customer's site (their network had some blocks and I needed to download files from the office), but I don't do so on a regular basis.

I set up a secure network right after I hooked my wireless router up...people trying to mooch wouldn't get a very good signal from the street, but I paid for the bandwidth and I'm not sharing...

I figure that if they are dumb enough (I'm not calling you dumb Schneehund, I mean people who are not trying to give out free internet) to leave the network unsecured then you may as well use it. I secure mine but have used an unsecured network at a beach condo.

Not sure how various companies utilize setup for their wireless router, but when we setup our Netgear wireless router, I had thought to myself you would have to be really inept not to setup protection of the most bare nature. It was almost harder not to password protect the network due to the warnings, lol.
