My furthest day trip has been Killington - about 3 1/2 hours. My rule of thumb is to have a 1:1 ski:drive ratio - i.e. I like to be on skis as long as I'm in the car. The problem is that the longer the drive gets, the more difficult maintaining that ratio becomes.

The farthest I've done for a day trip was to Killington from Torrington, CT. Mapquest says its about 180 miles, except I think we went the long way on the way up... That was a long trip back after a day of spring skiing.

I drove (well I personally didn't drive because I can't) 3.5 hours to West Virginia. Left at 6am, got there at 9:30am, left at 8pm, and at home by 12am.

A few seasons ago we did two day trips to Mont Orford, QC from Springfield, MA. I think it is 260 miles each way. It took 4 to 4 1/2 hours each way, I have only done it nonstop those two times.

The roads were clear up and back both times.

Max was probably when I was in Boston. This past April, I drove about 240 miles round trip to get to Cannon for one day of skiing...similar amount two days later to get to Loon  Would do it again in heartbeat though...two great days and about 450-500 miles :D

3.5 hours Boston to Snow, and back. Done that several times. 1.5 to Sunapee is very common, as has been 2 hours to Gunstock for night skiing.

Did Albany to Stowe for a day trip once - that's gotta be close to 200 miles each way. When you're young and in love, you do lots of crazy things.....

This is why I'm SO HAPPY to be out of Boston and back in Northern New England!

In Boston we were:

30 miles to Blue Hills (if taking 128)
25 miles one way to Nashoba.
50 miles to Wachusett.
75 miles to Pats Peak.
120 miles to Cannon.
90 miles to Sunapee.
110 miles to Loon.
180 miles to Burke.

My how things change!

About 7 miles to Storrs Hill (Lebanon Ski Hill)
10 miles to Whaleback (assuming she re-opens)
15 miles to Dartmouth Ski Way.
35 miles to Killington/Pico.
20 miles to Ascutney.
55 miles to Cannon.
75 miles to Burke.
30 miles to Sunapee.

So what once was a single trip to Pats Peak (75 miles) is now a roundtrip to Sunapee and some change. That's a big difference, especially with gas prices as they are.

3-3.5 has been my day trip max. kmart and MRG both pushed just past the 3 hour mark when i was in the boston area. though kmart was definitely doable in just under 3 if the traffic cooperated. i think 2 is a fair drive and 3 tended to be my max. never really had a ratio for skiing as greg does. good skiing is good skiing and always worth the drive. ratios of 1:24 skiing to driving are fine by me :D

Longest Day Trip

I guess that beats me if he drove it instead of taking the ferry. I have done Smithtown to Mt Snow and return. That is 260 miles each way on my odometer. If ALLSKING drove it all the way, he would have done an extra 30 miles each way.

I estimate that when I move to Utah next year the travel distances to the following areas will be approximately:

Alta - 15 miles
Snowbird - 14 miles
Solitude - 19 miles
Brighton - 19 1/2 miles
Park City - 30 miles
The Canyons - 29 Miles
Deer Valley - 28 Miles
Snowbasin - 45 miles
Powder Mt. - 58 Miles

How's that for saving on fuel costs?

how far was burke for you? About 3 hours right, cause cannon is about 2:15 with a stop so i would burke would be about another 45 minutes, right???

I have done that a few times...I would leave around 2 or 3 am so its to early for the boat and then just end up driving around again.
