I believe that it is the Federal Highway people who are pushing the mileage based exit numbers

Except that there used to be multiple exits with the same number and depending on the route you took you could overlap numbers and be many, many, many miles away from LL Bean. *cough*

The mileage-based numbering system is what many, many parts of the country have, and it really makes a lot more sense. You always know how far it is to your exit just by reading a mileage post, as well as easily knowing distances just by subtracting exit numbers.
It's just a little depressing when driving up to Baxter ... exit 244.

You could get all that mileage info from this wierd thing we used to use called a "map" or "road atlas". I do realize that the duplicating numbers for the first few exits of 95 after the Portsmouth bridge into Maine was wierd but changing them all to mileage numbers just doesn't make sense to me. As far as the confusion about finding Freeport, once again a map would go along way in solving that problem.

Don't forget that mileage-based exit numbers mean not having to create A-B-C exits (or renumbering) when adding a new exit between two existing ones. Even if you have two exits in close proximity you can number them a mile apart.
