Green Mountain, NH

Date Hiked: 05/01/07

Trails(s) Hiked: High Watch Trail

Difficulty: Moderate

Conditions: Sunny, mostly dry trail

After a few days of rain, I was finally able to get out on the trails again. With clouds approaching from the south and west, I decided to head east and do a somewhat quick climb up Green Mountain.

For the most part, the trail was dry - a few patches of snow and mud, but nothing the Fonz couldn't jump. With the exception of two short steep parts, the hike on the High Watch Trail is easy to moderate in pitch.

The views from the deck of the summit fire tower were excellent - the Belknaps, Ossipee Mountains, Whites (southern and Presidential), and smaller Maine peaks all visible.

It's a tad below 2,000 in elevation...maybe a mile south of Route 25 and maybe 1.5 miles east of Route 16. Also about a mile west of the Maine border.

To get to it, take Route 25 East from 16 for a few miles, then take a right onto Green Mountain road. Maybe a mile up that, there will be a small wooden "Fire Tower" sign on the left...head down to the end of the road to the Class IV Road sign and you'll be just about at the trailhead.

Probably about 3-4 miles roundtrip, about 1,100' vertical from this approach. Nice views on the summit tower.
