You may have read in some publications that there were other ski trails built around the same time that the Thunderbolt was. These were done by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp.). One of them being the Stoney Ledge trail on the NW side of Greylock.
My sliding partner and I had a very nice a/d of the bolt earlier in the morning and decided to go check out the Stoney Ledge trail. The hike in goes over lots of flat before finally kicking up to a good pitch and then pretty much stays that way with a few rollers to the top of the Sperry road overlook which looks into the hopper.
With a little TLC, I think this trail could be brought back to life like the Thunderbolt has. I got to thinking how great it would be to revive the old CCC trails that have gone feral. hmmmm.......
As we made our way up to the overlook the weather was changing by the minute, sleet, rain, snow. We decided to descend via the Roaring Brook trail instead of the Stoney Ledge because I knew the pitch was more consistent but narrower. The slide down was okay. Nothing like the bolt, of course. I would probably not hike it to go down again. I think I may focus attention on the Stoney Ledge trail and see what possibilities are there.
The one highlight of the afternoon was getting to see what we think were bobcat tracks on our way up the Stoney Ledge trail. That was very cool!
