Resort or Ski Area: Gunstock

Conditions: Groomed man-made, fast hard pack, and some loose granular plus a little man-made on Tiger Steeps that qualifies as packed powder

Since my daughter was having her 13th birthday party that night, she politely requested that her 15 yr old brother and his friends stay far away. Actually she demanded it. Anyhow, the mountain is 45 minutes from our house and reasonably priced for night skiing.

They have been diligent in blowing snow and the trails are nicely covered. As soon as the unlit part of the mountain was shut down, the groomers and snow guns were back to work.

I let the 15 yr old and his buddies loose, I caught up with some friends whose kids are in a school program on Friday nights. The mountain was cold and fast. The exception to the fast hardpack rule was Tiger Steeps which is a short, ungroomed section. It looks like they must have just opened with with new man-made snow. Though it is very short, each run could be made into a different experience if you picked a different line. Several of us agreed that we would like to have a little t-bar just for that section.

The rest of the mountain was conducive to skiing as fast as you can/dare. At about 9 pm the slopes are wide-open so you can go for a short speed-adrenaline rushes without putting the public at risk.

I'll bet it will be nice today after they groom it all. I do wish, however, that they would leave a run (maybe Redhat) ungroomed for the season. It would make night skiing so much more interesting.

Finally, for those who need to know, the terrain park is open and looks to be be in good shape. The only 1/2-pipe, however, is the little one next to Smith.
