On the injured list? Need a day to chill? Take in some ski jumping without going to the Olympics...

More than 40 of the world’s top ski jumpers from the U.S., Europe and Canada – those not competing at the Olympics, that is – will be leaping from the track at the traditional Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition Feb. 15-16 at Brattleboro in southern Vermont.

Chris Lamb won the 2010 and 2013 Harris Hill events and hold the hill record for the longest jump at 335 feet, has the opportunity to retire the Harris Hill trophy with another win – a feat that’s only been five times in the 91 years since the event was first held in 1922. Only an occasional snow drought, World War II, and a three-year hiatus to rebuild the jump in the 1990s have interrupted the series.

Taking in the jumps in Brattleboro (Cedar St. – left off I-91 and follow signs) is a local opportunity to get a glimpse of the event most will watch from Sochi, Russia during the Winter Olympics this month. Jumpers will launch off the Olympic-sized 90-meter jump at speeds of 60 mph. This is the only U.S. stop on the FIS Cup Series.

Competition will begin each day at 11 a.m. and will conclude by 4 p.m. It is described as a family-friendly event with opening ceremonies, appearances by Jumper the mascot, food and drink vendors, a bonfire, and more.

Tickets are $20 (adults); $15 (youth 6-12); free (5 and under). Payment at the gate is by cash and check only. Purchase online here. (http://www.brattleborotix.com). Discounted tickets may be purchased through Feb. 14 at a number of local stores. The event is totally staged by volunteers with Pepsi as presenting sponsor. Other sponsors are Entergy, The Richards Group, Mount Snow Resort, and Foard Panel.

The Harris Hill jumps are literally 3 minutes off Exit 2 of I-91 in Brattleboro. And this annual event is BIG in the local Brat community

My wife and I have gone for the last two years. Seeing it live is awesome. You just don't get the same effect from watching it on TV. And hiking up next to the jump is really neat as well.

It's a fun atmosphere; they have an opening ceremony, awards and there are a lot of food vendors. We usually stay for a few hours and bring some portable chairs to sit in.

they let you bring a cooler in? I could see a little tailgate action being fun.

I'm not sure about coolers. Thought they didn't allow them, but I don't see anything on the website about it. I don't think they want people bringing in beers. However, I bring in a backpack and there wasn't a problem.

If you get there early, you can park in the field where the event is held. You'll probably want a 4wd/awd; it can get a bit sloppy if the sun is out and gets above freezing. One year, we parked at Grafton Cheese and walked over. Another, took the shuttle from Grafton Cheese.

We went Saturday and had a great time. The longest jump of the day was 96 meters. Someone in practice had done 103 meters which is really long. They ended up moving the starting gate down the ramp a few ticks to compensate for the fast snow on the ramp. The two youngest jumpers were 12 and 13...both went around 80 meters. Keep your eyes open; people at Harris Hill will end up in the Olympics some day.
