Today I found out that a student from last year, my star student, died last night. Apparently, she had a severe asthma attack, everything closed up, they could not intibate her. Her heart stopped, part ruptured (aorta I think).

This young lady was remarkable. She went from a virtual non-reader to a confident reader who volunteered to read in class,in one year. In Math she jumped from beginning third grade skills, to passing the 8th grade State Test.

She was accepted into the vocational school, but told she probably would not get her selected focus area because it was the most difficult to get into. She got into it. I remember the night she called me to tell me, she was so thrilled. She was doing well there too, she had all A's and B's (and 1 C that kept her off honor roll last quarter). She was well on her way, doing so great! I was so proud of her, and she was proud of herself.

I talked to her yesterday morning, I stopped at her bus stop to say hi as I have done hundreds of times this year. We were planning to meet at Friendly's for lunch this summer. She told me she would cut my hair for me (she was in cosmetology). As I started to leave, she yelled out, "I love you, Ms. P."

Her funeral is on Friday...I can't go, that is when I am being operated on.

I'm so heart sick.

As she quoted in the 8th grade yearbook last year...

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."

Losing a student is one of my biggest fears. I'm so sorry for your loss. Right now you should be focusing on your operation. You will have time to pay your respects after your recovery.

So sorry to hear; you must feel like the world is totally falling apart. I know how that feels...try to focus on the small light at the end of the tunnel; if you don't see it yet, look harder, it's there.

You never get more than you can handle...things will work out.

Talked to Steph's dad today. They are all a mess. I most likely will not make the funeral on Monday, but you bet I am going to try. It was changed because they donated her other organs so someone else might benefit. They also donated her heart and lungs to science so that maybe someone else might be saved. This is what Steph would have wanted. A year ago to the day she had a similar, but no way near as severe episode but pulled through it, she told her dad then that if she ever died she wanted to help as many people as she could. She was a strong willed, wonderful caring young lady. She will be sorely missed.

Her family is quite poor. They live check to check. Despite their financial woes, she was always right there ready to give to anyone else in need. She once saved her lunch money for a few weeks to give to a friend who's dad had cancer. Eventhough she was on reduced lunch and knew that that $.40 a day would help her own family, she and a friend(in similar circumstances) bought one lunch and split it so that they could give the other friend the money. She had a heart of gold!
