HED Jet 5 Express Wheelset - Clincher
HED is refreshingly anti-marketing. They don't make a big deal about releasing something new until they have something new. And even then, it usually shows up more as a running change. The Jet 5 Express Clincher Wheelset fits into that tradition.
It fits in between the Jet 4 and Jet 6, which you probably guessed. It's a 55mm rim depth, closer to the 60mm Jet 6 than the 44mm Jet 4. And the size says something about HED's general wheel philosophy: aerodynamics before weight. What might surprise you is the weight, at a claimed 1681g per set, is heavier than the Jet 6. And herein is the second big thing to know about the wheel. It does not share the FR, Flamme Rouge, designation of either the 4 or 6. This means it beats them rather handily on price at the cost of a little weight.
But, there's more good news hidden. With new construction and a new shape, this budget wheel outperforms last year's Jet 6 FR. There are two things going on. One is that HED has switched their top layer from woven carbon-fiber to uni-directional carbon fiber. Besides a smooth-appearing finish, there is a practical benefit. The uni-directional cloth is flatter, so it takes less resin to adhere to the other layers, resulting in the same strength for less weight. The second thing, and this is throughout the line, is that the spoke end of the rim has a more rounded shape (more 'blunt,' or less V-like), which makes it faster and more stable.
As with all HED Jet clinchers, this wheel has HED's C2 rims as the base structure, and the carbon aero section bonded to it. The C2 is their 23mm wide rim concept, which offers better aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and stability.
As with all HED deep-section wheels, the Jet 5 Express has their Stability Control Technology (SCT) dictating the shape of the deep section. It's their proprietary rim-profile design process. They shape each rim depth differently so it has both the lowest aero drag and the greatest cross-wind stability.
The hubs are HED's Sonic design, with a flangeless 18-hole hub in front and a 24-hole flanged design in rear. Both are anodized black. The front hubs are laced radially for aerodynamics and the rear are laced two-cross for lateral strength. The spokes holding the hubs to the rims are blades from Sapim and are anodized black. The spoke nipples are threaded into the rim for greater strength.
The HED Jet 5 Express Clincher Wheelset comes with either a Campagnolo-spline cassette body or a Shimano/SRAM-spline body. Please note that HED does not recommend this wheelset for anyone weighing over 190lbs. Claimed weight is around 1681g for the set.
