I'm considering going up to the Lake Placid area during the summer to hike Mt Marcy and then in the winter to ski Whiteface. Any recommendations for good inexpensive lodgings? Thanks in advance.

golden arrow is like 169 or something a night...I booked for august to hike some peaks...they are pretty full on weekends right now but midweek are pretty empty.
The hilton winter deal is a joke. Two years ago it was like 59 a person a night WITH LIFT TICKET to whiteface. That's an absurd value. They are paying you 10 dollars to stay there as the whiteface ticket is 60-69 dollars a day depending on when you go. Now they have increased the prices...to 68 dollars or something like that. Take advantage of it. Get a 4th floor room, park right behind your room, have a view of the frozen lake and the alepnglow of whiteface, get a free all you can eat breakfast, a free lift ticket to a sick mountain, go midweek when it is EMPTY, ski all day and then walk in town thirty steps to eat dinner.

The Golden Arrow one is more than I want to spend. It's not important that I stay right in Lake Placid, may look in the surrounding area. Definetly would love to take advantage of the Hilton deal if it's still offered this coming season, thanks.

Brookside motor in in Upper Jay is 69 dollars per night for a two bedroom efficiency. I used to stay there when I traveled up on the weekends. it staight out of the 70's but it is clean and the water pressure is strong. Its about 15 miles from LP and 7 miles from Whiteface. They take dogs. Nothing else really in Jay

If you want to stay in LP check out the Art Devlin Motor Inn. Its reasonable( less than 100) and it is clean and pretty up to date.

If i were planning on primarily skiing or hiking I would stay in Jay.
If you want to enjoy the nightlife on LP Art Devlins

Mt Marcy hike sucks. It like a long walk up hill. It is the worst hike out of the 46.

Well, that's what I'm looking for in a hike, long walk up hill :) . All kidding aside, besides distance and vertical, why do you say it sucks? Do you think Whiteface is better, if so, why?

It is the most traveled hike up here. It is a 7 foot wide trail that has steps built into it. All I kept thinking is this is the most boring walk up a hill I have ever experienced.
WHiteface is certainly better IMO. Less traveled. But when you get to the top you look around at 300 pound people and it just looses some of its appeal.

If someone were to ask me for a good hike I would say Nipple Top. Not only does it have a cool name but you will feel like you are the only one out there.

Another good one you might consider is from the ADK Loj take VanHo trail to Wright, then Algonquin, from there a ridge hike to Iroquois.

You bag 3 high peaks in one hike all of which have summits in the artic alpine zone. Great hike with beautiful views.

Sounds interesting, how much time for such a hike?

Cobble Mt. Lodge - I've neer stayed there myself, but I have friends that stay there on a regular basis year after year. Nothing fancy, but clean. Prices change with event weeks and seasons, but I'm pretty sure it's $59 a night weekends in the winter.
