Ended up staying at the Comfort Inn in Rutland which, along with the Hampton Inn, is one of two I would ever stay in in Rutland because I'm not as brave with the shitholes as Kusty is

I stayed at that comfort inn last month, needed the luggage cart to haul up to the 3rd floor. But they have a good breakfast.

I guess I prefer the places where you back up to your door and can quickly toss everything in.

I've found that Vermont motels are ridiculously overpriced compared to Maine and NH. I priced motels in central VT recently and the lowest I could find MIDWEEK was $90 a night near Magic. Most are well over $100 and I could only imagine how shady those joints are. I know of a decent motel in NH with sauna and hot tub just minutes from major areas. It's clean, quiet and run by a family not by corpo money grubbers. $60 a night.

I used to call motels directly and talk to the owner or manager and sometimes I'd get good deals for midweek winter dates. Those days are gone. Booking agents are a scam, Kayak, Trivago, Hotels.com and expedia are leeches. They're just middlemen who ADD cost to every booking.

Central Jersey ski club looks like a good deal. I'll have to look into it.

Or maybe camp in the snow like the Scandinavians. I've got all the gear but haven't figured out how to keep my boots warm and dry.

Found a hotel/inn in rumford Me that has 3 bedrooms and an outside private entrance. It was 200 a night but with the 3 bedrooms comes out to 66 per couple. Great for hitting black of Maine and saddleback.

rumford is a weird place. ive only driven thru. but this weird dense downtown on an island, and then this like twin peaks looking factory on the northside, which puts out the most foul odor ive ever smelt.

NH and ME are a little better but only a little. Much easier to find reasonable lodging out west unless you're somewhere remote like Big Sky.
NY has some decent places to stay. Chains up and down the Northway (I-87) and the Lake George area. But east-west travel in New England north of I-90 sucks. Vermont and NY and Lake Champlain make it a longer trip then it should be.

Covid changed everything. from the mid 2000s until covid i would reserve the BW in waterbury for every weekend of winter. i could cancel that friday before 4 no penalty. my average cost lets say last year before covid was prob 125 a night. hands down nicest BW in the world Fantastic bfast, social room, pool, covered bridge to party at and walk downtown waterbury. i would bounce between stowe bolton and bush every weekend or even smuggs and jay were easy enough. not its double that or even more.

On vacation starting Monday. Looked at lodging in the Jay and /Stowe areas and don't think I'm ok with dropping the kind of cash their charging. Lots of day trips and rooms in MWV which is quite a bit cheaper. Maybe wait till march to get up to VT after the peak season

I now rarely book lodging for friday nights now that lodging has gotten more expensive and I'm staying further away from mountains. Weekend trips for me now usually have a lazy friday night at home to pack up the car and go to bed early. Then wake up at 5 and drive to the mountain saturday. Places like Killington, Pico, Stratton, I can get to by 8:30am on saturday driving up from home. I actually find this easier than having to pack the car thursday, get on the road from work on Friday afternoon, then drive in Friday night traffic in the dark up to mountains.
This is my strategy for 2 days at K.

It sucks that the Holiday Inn in Rutland went to shit and apparently is being paid by VT house homeless people. Stayed here with school trips I was an advisor on years ago and it was a decent place. I was surprised to see that it lost its Holiday Inn franchise several years ago. Just read the reviews online and it appears to have become a de-facto homeless shelter, but they'll still rent you a room if you dare...
Stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in South Burlington a few weekends ago while skiing Bolton. Used to be nice with a decent Italian restaurant next door. Has gone down hill, looks a little beat up and I could swear they are housing homeless people there too.

Everywhere is insane with the prices. I sucked it up and booked Stateside hotel at Jay. Definitely more expensive now than it was last year.

Yep, been doing this for a few years now. Problem I've run into is that a some places want you to book a two night minimum. I just stay further from the mountain where they are willing to do Saturday night only. Its worked ok so far, just makes for a long day on Saturday.

That is the smell of paper making. Large swathes of Northern New england used to smell like paper, unfortunately there are only a handful remaining. Gorham NH was worst, roll up your windows five miles outside of town bad.

I travel about 100 nights a year for work, which builds me enough points where I almost never pay for hotels for leisure travel at Marriott or Hilton brands. Those brands' properties in Brattleboro, Williston and Hanover are always really cheap on points. Can mean a 30-45 minute ride to the mountains, but I'm fine with that.

North Conway Hilton and Marriott brands not as good of a deal. Need to time them right.

Other than those I do three night or more stays at AirBnbs.

I’ve looked at airbnb midweek for Stratton one bedrooms, but the cleaning service fees basically double the price. Midweek at the bromley view inn is super convenient and reasonable, their restaurant is closed but they let you use their cutlery/plates/microwave/dining room.
