I'm hearing over on the Hunter board that they are talking to banks to find a buyer. Anyone else out there hear anything? I don't know if I like the idea of it being sold because I like the way they run it now with the way they make as much snow as they do. I would imagine that most other companies would run it just like any other mountain in that area.

I haven't heard anything. The place must be profitable as all of the tough guys & punk teenagers from Long Island are there every weekend. Do I sound biased? I hope the new owners (if it's true) don't change a thing as I wouldn't want the current Hunter crowd to branch out to other areas in the Cats'. I love Annapurna but those lines...

...Sorry, I can't miss an opportunity to comment on Huntah!

I can't argue about the weekend crowd at Hunter. That's why I stick to going there on weekdays. It's too bad because I think the mountain itself is really nice.

Hunter

I haven't heard anything about it being for sale. That would be something they'd be talking about on my mountain since they're in the same area. This doesn't mean it's not true, however.

I did hear they're having a rough year. Belleayre is one of the very few mountains in the Northeast which has been showing consistent growth over the last few years. Hunter, along with most other areas, have been showing less skier visits each year. Not good for anyone. I'm not a fan of Hunter but I wouldn't want to see them go out of business.

Rickster, do you know this as a fact or are you just speculating. I'm surprised to here that most ski areas in the NE are losing ski areas. The population is certainly exploding  (unfortunately) judging by the amount of sprawl  I see in NJ & elsewhere. Even if the % of skiers was going down, I'd think the population increase would be enough to offset.

Industry probs...

I know the areas are hurting lately because they're just not getting enough skier visits. Nobody really understands why our mountain has been doing better while others have been doing worse. We don't even know why ourselves. Now, keep in mind, a place like hunter is used to somethign like 450-500k skier visits per year. At Belleayre, we're still less than 200k. Last year we did something like 165k and that was another record (up from 150k the year before). So we started out low and had no where but up to go.

I'm really not sure why less people are going. I know I seem to see just as many cars heading up the NY State Thruway each Friday evening so I don't understand the numbers. It's just a shame. I hope everyone can work it out.

Hunter Mtn. for sale. Now that's funny :D . The new multi-million Learning Center building that was built a few years ago was paid for with CASH profits. I don't think Hunter Mtn is hurting for money. Yes skier/rider visists are down all over the Northeast at most resorts compared to last year. Last year was an above average year for the north east with higher than normal snowfall. The early season snow that did fall this year in many cases was followed up by rain. Its been a tough year for the north east.

Its nice to see the villiage of Hunter is being remodeled with some grant money.

Dug a little...

I dug around a little with some of the oldtimers at my mountain. Apparently, Hunter is for sale and has been for many years. In fact, Intrawest (owners of Killington, Mountain Creek and many others) had made an offer a couple of years back. The folks at Hunter liked the amount but Intrawest wouldn't let them have any control so they decided not to sell to them. Now Intrawest doesn't have the cash flow.

As of right now I don't know of anyone who is interested in it.

Fund...

Well, we can certainly start a fund but I can say I don't have much to put in. Not sure it'll be enough but let's see what I've got here...

:::digging in pockets:::

Ah! Here we go! I've got exactly...fourty-two cents and three pieces of lint. How's that for a start?

When did Intrawest buy Killington from ASC? I thought the rumor was that Vail was interested in Killington?
