Hunter reminds me of Pats Peak in that the SAME family that started it now owns and operates it...the Patenaude's...local business folk who were chicken farmers and now own a lumber, concrete, and hardware business along with the ski area and conference center.

It's a good thing to be family owned...

I hate huge skie corps....

I often hear people bashing Hunter a lot as well, but here's what I've realized over the years.

-Most people who are good at skiing or riding respect it, even if it's not their favorite mountain.

-Most people who bash it fall in to one of two categories. 1. They are not at expert level, and therefore end up on the limited intermediate terrain, which tend to be crowded and somewhat limited from the summit. Or 2. They are the upscale types that don't like the idea of skiing at a place without a Starbucks or don't like the idea of spending time with the "blue collar" crowd.

These are generalizations of course, but ones that I find mostly true from personal experience. I have friends that fall into each of the two categories that I just talked about. I also know people who used to not like Hunter, but as they've gotten better over the years, have learned to really like it. I myself am one of those people. Back in the day, I would have prefered places like Windham or Okemo because compared to what I am today, I sucked. Though I spend more time in VT than I do in NY, when I'm up in the Catskills, my votes go to Hunter and Plattekill!

Hunter Mountain

I think Hunter is a terrific mountain with decent base facilites if (as I now can due to being retired) you can ski it mid-week. Because of the relatively easy drive from the NY and even LI area, it gets pretty crowded on week-ends. But, isn't that a problem at most ski areas? When my kids were younger, I had access to "freebies" at nearby (now defunct) Cortina. As they all advanced in ability, Cortina became too tame for them. We used to sell our free Cortina passes in the Cortina parking lot early on Saturday morning and then go on to Hunter with the $$. The problem back then (mid to late 80's) was the VERY limited beginner and intermediate route down from the summit. All the numerous expert trails were constantly bumped up, so the kids ended up on crowded, dangerous runs. Furthermore, the week-end crowd tended to party hard and there was a lot of drinking. I used to ski behind my daughter with my poles tucked under my arms and the tips sticking outward like spikes to keep the ass-holes from skiing over her tips or tails. On a number of occasions I actually intentionally "took out" some turkey that was going to cut it too close to my child. This was really not a fun way to have to ski. The kids and I moved on, they grew older and better, and I really didn't get back there much. In the last couple of years, I have noticed that they have improved the "easier" trails so that they have more capacity. They have also started to groom some of the easier "blacks" (at least partially) to make them more appealing to less able skiers, and thus take some of the traffic off the blues and greens. They still have some terrific steeps that those of us who like to ski them can get lots of turns on. And, they have excellent snow-making which gets the mountain going early-season, and keeps it in good shape during the season. I also feel that the crowed has "tamed" somewhat (at least during the week) and they seem to encourge families more. I now find it a great "day trip" option when it is not optimal for me to get to VT from LI, or just when the "mood" hits me to go do a day.

Their bar at the Hunter lodge is the best I've ever been to for Apres Ski drinks. I hear this real bad band called 23a plays every once in a while there. Thank God, I never caught them.

The mountain is tough and I always feel that my skiing has improved after a day of skiing there. I love the whole vibe there.
