Resort or Ski Area: Hunter (Saturday), Windham (Sunday)

Trip Report:

Went up to the Catskills this past weekend. Skied Hunter all day Saturday and skied a few hours at Windham before heading home Sunday. Hunter was in impressive shape for this time of year, had a variety of terrain open, and appeared on the verge of opening more (I think Huega and Upper K-27 opened Sunday, and they were blasting snow on Claire's). Eastside Drive was probably the best run of the top half of the mountain, as they had the snow guns feeding the whales (and refreshing what face-planting snowboarders were scraping off), but Eisenhower had the best snow on the mountain and was starting to bump up as the day went on. Hopefully they let it continue.

Windham was Windham, but we couldn't pass up the $23.99 liftopia deal. Webel was pretty fun and enough of a traverse to keep the masses away, but otherwise the open terrain was pretty bland.

A few pics of Webel, a steep stretch with some big snowmaking mounds to keep it interesting:

All in all, a great weekend to start the season (tragically had to spend Thanksgiving in Jamaica). Hope to make it to the AZ day at Hunter.

While I'm at it, I thought I'd throw in a plug for the Catskill Lodge. If you're looking for a nice place to stay close to either Windham or Hunter, these guys really treat you well. The breakfast was great, of course, but it was really the post-skiing bourbon and wine that sealed the deal.
