They say theyve had over 100 inches already on the year yet only have 19 trails open? I know the big storm in October played a role, but maybe 20 inches worth. That means that with 80" of snowfall they can only open 19 trails? Are they measuring the deepest drifts possible or what? Whiteface has had maybe 25" and has the same amount of terrain open. What gives?

it all blew into the woods. after half of thei sno total melted earlier in the year before they even opened. i think i started a thread on here recently about that. they definitely had 1.5'+ in the woods this weekend, but the rest of the trails were pretty wind blown except in a few lee areas

Riv is right.

This is season total.

We have had about 12 inches or so here in the UV for the season, but it has melted, blown away, etc, etc. This is the running total...not what is on the ground.

Oh I know its not what they have on the ground. I still think theyre full of poo poo cause with over a hundred inches total for the year and snowmaking the fact that they arent any closer to being fully open than other resorts with 1/4 the snowfall is pretty lame.

wind blown, seriously.

jay peak's snow making doesn't quite equal some of the other larger resorts such as kmart and okemo which is another factor. it doesn';t help that the didn't open any glades despite ample coverage.

My experience has been not to trust the snow coverage as broadcasted by the resort, and this is general with most resorts, even the Smuggs "no-bull" report.

Sometimes you see reports with 2 feet base but only one third of the run open, make you wonder.

Riv's right. Jay is not known for their snowmaking. In fact, it is only mediocre at best. Sunday River, Okemo, Sunapee, etc. are better at snowmaking because they have to be. They don't get as much snow and they have to rely on snowmaking and in fact market their snowmaking as their big draw.

Jay advertises its SNOW and to be honest, ask an old timer and they will tell you that it is known for being "cold, windy, and icy." They DO get a lot of snow, but a lot of wind as well that blows it around and, regrettably, the glades was an answer to what Jay lacked on its all-too-wide and exposed trails--that snow which is blown into the woods. If you look at the trail map and see the resort from the distance, you see some really wide trails like Can Am and Northway. The glades were only started in the early 1990's and were (a) cheap and, (b) saved Jay.

This is at least the second year in a row that jay has included totals from big early season dumps that melted before the lifts even started turning. Since this is not part of their official "season", it does seem bogus to include them in their season totals.

hey, i'm not usually one to defend so reports, but living near jay and skiing there the past 12 days straight, I can tell you a few things. 1st the present base snow started accumulting on friday December 2nd, because just before that we got washed out with warm and rain, so only about half (at the most)of the years reported snow fall is still on the ground. 2nd yes it was wind blown, but the snow that has fallen from the recent storms has been so fluffy that it settles a lot. 3rd their could be a lot more terrain open, but for some reason they are being very conservative dropping ropes this year and they are blowing snow on a lot of the run outs to keep a lot of the trails closed. all in all I'm happy that they aren't dropping ropes because it means more pow for me, and if anything they are underestimating their snow totals because they didn't even report a few snow falls before they opened in November and after each storm it seems that their is more than they are reporting (except today it seemed like 4" was a strech) Last wednesday was epic, their was about 25 cars in the lot and two feet of powder, I hiked up to JFK and had choking waist deep pow all the way down to ullr's, not many people know this because their was really no one at the hill during the surprise dump[/quote]
