I visit Barre every year to visit with our few remaining VT suppliers(we mostly get china granite due to cost) and wow is that town a shithole...but Montpelior is pretty nice..I always thought Burlington should be the capitol..

The reason Montpelier is the capital is because it's the center of the state. Everyone in the state is within 2 hours of it except perhaps the Bennington area.

The location helped but as I recall, it had more to do with money. It was cheaper for the state to locate their government in Montpelier (as I recall, the town offered the state a better deal financially).

Yep, that's what I recall as well. We're talking about events in the 1800's mind you now. At one point the state capital was/or at least was going to be in DANVILLE.

St. Jay was in the running as well. But Montpelier got the nod.

Zand might not have a picture, but I do. Here is Burke from my window. I miss that view.

Danville would be perfect. Where else can you see the whole damn state from the center of town? ;)

I'll get some pics up at some point. I'm back in MA for the weekend so it'll have to wait till Tuesday though.

I tried putting some pics in the gallery, but it's being dumb and gives me a fatal error. Sorry.

Here's the hill in question off to the north... I know it's not Jay now but perhaps it's Bald Mountain that Trailboss was speaking of?

Yes, it is Bald Mountain, aka Westmore Mountain.

If you look closely, you will see that there is a Fire Tower on the summit that offers incredible views. PM for hike info.

My 13 year old couldn't understand why NYC wasn't captial of NYS and that Portland of ME. Guess you could say that about Manchester and NH too.

Makes sense to keep the political and financial centers separate. Keep the politicians as far from the $$$ as possible.

We Massholes might be better off if our capital were located somewhere in the central part of the state.

The problem with MA is that with all the polititans and $$$$ all on the eastern side of the state, none of the $$$ comes west of 128. The capital should be centered in Worcester, or even Springfield.
