Indoor skiing in New Jersey..Xanadu..

I'm sure some of you have heard about the huge construction project occuring in the Meadowlands area of NJ..right near I-95/NJ turnpike. I sometimes do work in that area and construction is moving at a rapid place for the first indoor ski area in the northeast. It looks really big from the highway. If you live within a few hours of there will you try it out? At least for the novelty? I'll definitely go there for some summer turns..I don't think I'll buy a season pass but I could see skiing there a couple times over the summer...Here's all the info on the complex/snow-dome from Wikipedia..

I can't see myself spending too much time there, but I'm sure I'll try it out a few times during the months when there is no natural skiing.

I'm sure I'll try it out a few times. It seems kinda funny to travel from New England to Jersey to ski. Pricing and NJ business trips will probably decide how often I go.

SNOW DOME:

There are alot longer snowdomes in Europe..some double as long and with double the Vert as the NJ dome. I'm gonna hit the snowdome on 223 Downhill skis with Fluro wax and see how much speed I can get on a 780 foot slope..lol

If I'm in the area during the summer time I'll try it out just as a novelty. Thats assuming the prices aren't too high and it's not too crowded.

I'm sure there will be times when I can arc Super G turns without more than 14 busloads of people on the one trail..

112ft vert? Thats like 2 GS turns. No thanks, I'll just go hiking. I can skip down a steep trail and pretend I'm skiing moguls.

You wouldn't pay 100 bucks to ski 112 vert tomorrow in NJ serviced by a Quad..I would..I'm a ski feen..

No, NJ is 5 hr ride anyway. I'll wait for the real stuff. I'd do it if it was free.

Since it's only 25 minutes from my house, I'll probably ski it a few times in the summer when I'm really jonesin'. I get to keep a good eye on the progress when Newark airport is landing to the south the Xanadu complex is off the left side of the airplane and the cockpit windows give a great view. It's coming along nicely, I think it will be open Fall or Winter of 2008, though there are a few outdoor areas closer so I'll wait until summer of 2009.

I may give it a shot one day. I don't know that it would satisfy my offseason need to ski though. I need to be outdoors, on a Mt, surrounded by trees in the bitter cold etc. But I can't say for sure unless I try it I guess.

Does CA stand for Continental airlines? I fly on the conti ERJ's between YHZ and EWR a lot. Just wondering if you're ever my pilot

No plans on going there - even if it is the only place I can get snow. The vertical is lame, and the people will be even lamer. A bunch of richie rich gapers and brats most likely.

It is probably super destructive to the environment - I can't even imagine the energy used to operate that thing in July and August.

That said, if it never snowed on the EC ever again and I had no other way to get my fix, i would probably go, but as long as I am getting the real thing 5 months out of the year, I can keep the demons at bay and remain somewhat reasonable by not spending 100 bux to get skiing hat is 5 times worse than what Blue Mountain offers on their opening day.

I think I heard something about this place 3 years ago but it's flown under my personal radar for a bit. I think America was ready for something like this, but I'm thinking it's in the wrong location. The problems I see with what they're doing are location, location, location and attraction mix. It's not an attractive location to travel to as a destination due to the crime and air quality, it's extremely expensive land, and THEN you have to drive piles hundreds of feet into the ground there to support a major structure and even after you're done doing that you're still prone to problems. The only thing they have going for them is the population base of the area, but drawing the typical new york skier (the bulk of whom are notorious for only going skiing once a year when snow falls in NYC) over to jersey to ski on a bunny slope for $100 is going to be a really tough sell. I think this thing more belongs in Vegas as a Casino/Attraction or on some $10,000 an acre vs. $10,000,000 an acre easier to build on land to the North of NYC as a stand alone attraction featuring a crapload of outlet stores, hotels and possibly a Casino. You need a Casino attached to something like this to rake in the money the skiing is going to cost you.
