Has anyone ever been to an indoor skiing facility? What I have read seems to indicate that they are becoming more popular. Although I can’t imagine how much they must cost to build, however once there done you never have to worry about rain or any other weather issues. Plus whatever snow they make must last for a very long time. I’m sure it can’t be the same as a natural mountain in the middle of winter, but right now they sound doable to me. As far as the Park Rats go it would seem ideal for them.

dry slope skiing

I'm also curious about the "dry slope" skiing I came across in google video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-928879558236330974
It looks pretty much like a real skiing to me, although I'm curious how wiping
out at that speed would end up like.

This place is located in Scotland and supposely the largest dry slope skiing
in Europe.

Has anybody skied on something like this? Has this ever been attempted in US?

[Added]
I found one manufacturer in US:
http://www.astroride.com
Looks pretty cool, but the last "News" entry is from 12/30/2004 so maybe it is
not picking up.

I wonder what the "wear and tear" factor on skis is on that artificial surface.

Is this really even an issue for most of the hard cores here? I mean, where else do folks proudly post pics of their trashed ski bottoms and then brag about the boulder field they skiied over to get to that sweet OB shot?

I would love to have a dry slope bump run nearby. I wonder if dry slope moguls are dangerous for your knees, though...

I sent an email to Jiminy Peak asking if they have ever looked into this. It will be interesting to see if and what they reply.

I think the issue in this case is that you don't get that sweet OB shot :)

Too bad Killington/ASC is in so much debt, this could bring new meaning to the longest ski season.... or as an alternative bring new life to Pico, they already run lifts for the Alpine slide, any thoughts?

Yeah I could ski that working at mountains that already have lifts running for alpine slides. Attitash, Pico I'm sure there are others. The question is would there be enough business to warrant the capital cost of the dry slope , maintenance of it, the stfaffing needed, and the cost of insurance.
I know I would go especially iof it was close to my house. I would probably buy a season pass to ski all summer.
