Is four pairs of skis enough?

Just two pairs now. My '02 K2 Axis X Pros - 182 cm and the new '06 Volkl Unlimited AC3s - 170 cm. The K2s will be the designated rock skis, but any other time I've had rock skis, I've never used them. I've found that I'd always rather ski the better ski regardless of the conditions. Beating them up sometimes just comes with the territory...

Boy, you guys are in for it now:

Rossi Energy mounted w/ tele bindings for all around skiing
K2 World Piste w/ tele bindings for off piste
Rossi Energy mounted with tele bindings for rock skis
Kahru Outbound with tele bindings, really beat, used only at the local community hill when I am helping out (setting race courses, checking lifts, etc.)

Head 360's - antiques. Trying to set them up with old cable bindings so I can tele ski them - just for kicks.

Rossi 5SV with downhill bindings. Haven't been used in 5 years. Still hold on to them because once upon a time I loved them and maybe I'll pull them out for kicks sometime.

Kahru Catamounts for XC backcountry skis
Atomic 'Chemical' XC skis for off track rock skis
Rossi waxless XC skis on off track/on track skiing
Fisher Superlight waxless XC skis for on-track kicking around (hand me downs from my wife)
Plume skis (old XC racing skis) made waxless with a chisel that I leave at work to ski at lunch

Rossi Carbon XC classic skis for racing
Fisher LS XC skating skis for training
Rossi Delta XC skating skis for racing

So by my count, thats 5 pairs of tele, 1 pair of downhill, and 8 pairs of cross country for a total of 14! And that doesn't count the 2 pairs of xc that I sometimes borrow from my wife, and the tele skis that I sometimes borrow from my son!

Do I win the prize for the most ridiculous, excessive gear junkie? My friends and co-workers seem to think so.

Skis are easy to accumulate over the years. I have six pair but only use three of them regularly.

I had those same Bandits in 191 cm. The binding fell off about 3 years ago. I bought my Intuitivs and never felt such a huge difference in my skiing.

Atomic 8.20's...I have a pair, 190's. Made some great improvements in my ability for the past five seasons. No rebound, but stable. I miss the adjustable Atomic bindings. When I upgraded my boots...the sole length was too long (351? Size 14 US) for the original binding, so I had some Markers mounted.

I have not skied them since I picked up my Volkl's last March.

Well, I've got three pair that are adjusted for my current boots and that I could take out:
186cm Dynastar Skiercross 66 (bought as NOS this year) w/Look Pivot bindings, the groomer ski
167cm Rossi T-Power Viper that have a whole lot of mileage and a pair of Rossi demo bindings -- the utility / rock / tree / if-they-decide-to-set-a-beer-league-slalom ski
198cm Rossi 9X 9.3 -- the go-fast skis

Also in the corner, not adjusted for my current boots (but could be):
188cm Rossi 9S (same year as RossiSkier's) w/bastardized Rossi Course FK's bindings (one heelpiece is from a race room set, the other three pieces are from retail stock.)
215cm Rossi DH skis, EX's topskin, non-Dualtec ski, w/EPB and Salomon Comp Spring bindings (the go really fast skis)

I'm debating whether or not to plan on hitting Jay's open downhill in March and breaking out the 215s again, and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with the 9S's...if they were shorter, I'd make them a box/rail ski, but they're a bit long and a bit lacking in sidecut to be a pair of play skis.

And no, I don't have enough gear. I still want a pair of the newest generation all-mountain skis, which are rumored to come rather close to living up to the name, preferably mounted with high-end AT bindings.

Haha, no wonder they call you "RossiSkier". I have those 9s's on the far left in a 193. . . I didn't count those because I never use them anymore.

The 9S's are in excellent shape and I use them occasionally for a few runs on groomers. They are extremely fast.

A lot of the old timers here on this board have confessed to having a pair of 9S or 9X as well as 5S's. I still see both models used on the hill all the time.

Five Pairs of alpine skis, but two don't count as they are old and haven't seen snow in a long time. Guess which ones...

205 Elan Comprex Marker M91
205 Volkl rentiger "R" with Marker MRR
180 Head Cyber Cross Ti with Solomon 997 carbon
175 Volant Machete Soul with Salomon s810 ti
178 Dynastar Legend 8000 with Salomon s810 ti AXE+

I also have a 165 Airwalk snowboard with Airwalk step-in boot/bindings

..and several pairs of cross country skis of varying age and style.

..and you should see my bike collection..... mtn bikes, road bikes, one fixie (my favorite), a tandem, a couple of classic raleigh 3 speeds (this is not including all the kids bikes and wife's bike!)

To address the original question, four skis should more than enough.

For a person who skis just the northeast, one would only need a MIDFAT, a thinner GS type, and a pair of rock skis. If you're into the bumps then a fourth pair of bump skis may be in order. Or if you're a tree hound, perhaps a pair of tree skis. Or, if you're a NEW SCHOOLER, a pair of twin tip park skis.

For a person who skis out west and the northeast, then add a pair of FATTIES.

optional: TWIN TIPS
optional: MOGUL
optional: BACKCOUNTRY
optional: TELEMARK
