WILMINGTON, N.Y. --- The 54th season of skiing and riding at Whiteface, in Wilmington, N.Y., is underway and the Olympic mountain is kicking off its winter events, Sunday, Dec. 11, with its first of five Super Sundays presented by Bud Light. It's a historic Sunday at the Whiteface.

December 7 marks the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. On that unforgettable day, several local men ascended Whiteface to build the very first racing shelter at the top of what is now known as Wilderness trail. They came down the mountain that afternoon to find out about Pearl Harbor having been bombed. Whiteface will honor the handful of men who built that very first lean-to on the mountain for racers to have shelter. They were the pioneers of alpine skiing, and were it not for them; there might not be a Whiteface Mountain today.

Skiing and riding during Historic Super Sunday is just $35 for adults, $30 for teens and $25 for juniors. In addition to some great skiing and riding, there will be a fireside chat with local historian Natalie Leduc, beginning at 11 a.m. in the cafeteria, and at 2 p.m. everyone is invited to participate in a ceremony honoring these pioneers. Then at 2:30 p.m. "Get hooked on History" with Red Hook Beer Specials, in the Cloudspin Lounge, while talking about the history of Whiteface Mountain.

Finally, dress up in your best 1940's ski gear for a chance to win a Whiteface Snow Sampler of four lift tickets.

Whiteface boasts the East's greatest vertical drop and was recently selected as the top destination for Off-Hill activities by readers of SKI Magazine. The 22nd annual survey also tabbed Whiteface Mountain as the fourth top ski resort in the eastern United States.

Whiteface , Wilmington and Lake Placid also received high marks from the magazine's readers for its scenery (#2), resort dining (#3), apres ski (#3), mountain character (#4), family programs (#7), challenging terrain (#7), overall terrain (#9), overall satisfaction (#9) and lodging (#10).

SnowEast Magazine readers also tabbed Whiteface/Lake Placid as the most scenic.

Don't forget about Coca-Cola's Why Not Wednesdays? Present any empty Coca-Cola product and get a one-day adult lift ticket for only $38 at Whiteface. Offer not valid with any other offers, programs, promotions, discounts, or frequent skier products. Limit one ticket per can.
