How can there be a new thread in an old thread. The whole point of this thread was to talk about not so steep stuff and how it is enjoyable....now we're back to lining up and comparing lengths...

Agree it's all conditions. Steepish and powder can be fairly easy if you're a decent skier. Steepish and see your reflection type ice really isn't much fun. There's really not much in the East inbounds, non-woods that I consider steep. Super steep and tight woods aren't that fun for me as it becomes more about survival unless you're a local and know every turn.

I like them both. I must admit lower grade groomers/glades are just as fun and in many cases...just as dangerous....

I like things like face chutes, bowls, etc..

But the simpler stuff imo is just as fun..

Lol people in my office used to make comments about my local hill when I would leave early to go ride. They would say..."why bother with that hill, its not even steep" lol...

I would reply. If its steep or if its flat means nothing.....Not being here....means everything! lol. (that would shut em up lol)

Nice try, Kingslug. I agree with you completely but it seems steep runs are more fun to talk about.

Well, I guess its like comparing a dragrace to a long touring event..the drag race is pretty wild but a nice tour through some scenic area is pretty fun as well...

I'm with you too Kingslug. It's nice to ski ungroomed without the steep factor.

I'm not as in love with the steeps as some others here but if the trail is truly snow loaded than I dig it. Ptarmigan at Attitash yesterday was pretty great compared to its usual condition. All too often in the east steep = boilerplate.

I thought about this Monday at Hunter. I compared sliding down Racers Edge which is steep and a little slippery ( it used to be a sheet but is much better now) to doing top to bottom runs on the longer mellow runs which can add up to almost 2 miles. That day I had more fun doing that so I used it as a stamina training day for my upcoming trip to Whistler which has a lot of vertical.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Lower Antelope at MRG. Long, twisty, varying width, plenty of challenge/steep parts but not ridiculously so; classic old New England trail. Never gets old and never gets groomed. Very low-traffic because at the bottom you have to climb through woods to get back to the base so often it'll have some of the best on-piste snow on the mountain. Cat Bowl > Lower Antelope is probably my favorite for first tracks on a pow day.

I love narrower, twisty trails with lots of little things to pop off on the sides. Lower Binder at Sugarloaf comes to mind. Almost like a natural mini-park. I also love trails with a steep wall on one side almost like a quarter pipe. It's so fun to ride up and do surf-style slash turns at the top.

Low angle glades are great. Being a snowboarder, it can be really hard to scrub speed on the steep stuff so it's nice to be able to link more than 3 or 4 turns without having to stop to scout out the next 3 or 4.

That said, there is something about being able to ride stuff that most snowboarders shy away from. I hate to admit it, but it feels pretty good to get props from solid skiers when they see me flow through something like Timbuktu at Jay. My boss is a hardcore skier and normally talks tons of trash about snowboarders but after riding with him for a few years, he makes a point to mention that I'm an exception when he knows I'm in earshot.

+1

I also like Paradise to Ferret to the Glades, that's not too steep.

Steep AND Deep.

Out west for sure. Back here in the east its more about snow conditions to me and what has then. Sliding down an icy headwall is not necessarly fun to me. I'm also a fan of lower angle bumps and glades. West Glade at Bretton Woods is a lot of fun and not steep at all.

Which is sort of a double edged sword. It's great fun in 6" but more than 12" and you get stuck.

er.. uh.. that's what she said. rimshot.gif

I have been considering trying skiing this year, but honestly I don't really see it happening. I'll just feel like I'm wasting time that I could be snowboarding. Plus I'll feel like a raging hypocritical tool. The only real reason I'd like to learn is so when I finally get a split board I'll have some idea of what I'm doing.
