Planning a trip out for a week in possibly January. I've never been and am interested in some personal knowledge of the lodging, mountain, dining, etc. Thanks!

Stay @ Tenton Village if you can....ski in ski out...little pricier, but you'll dread the bus rides from town in the morning...this was you just walk to the gondola (shame the tram is down for now)....

You are going to SOOO enjoy it..I may move the week to Feb though...check conditions early season..Take the Grand Targhee trip if you have a day..AWESOME SNOW....small cost..under $100 for the bus ride and lift ticket..

If you're okay with no frills, Hostel X is pretty reasonable. The ride from town isn't bad and you have a lot more options there.

Snow King is cheap and completely uncowded and has some steep stuff that stays untracked for a long time.

The cat skiing at Grand Taghee is worth it, if you have the cash.

A major issue at JHMR is learning your way around and figuring out where the snow got dumped. With 4000' of vertical, a bazillion acres (and even more through the gates), multiple aspects/exposures, It's a tough place to get to know. It can be mid winter in the Rendezvous bowl and spring in the Hobacks.

How many people are going? If there is 4-6 people staying in one of the older units, in TV, like Gros Ventre or Tensleep, 1BR can sleep 4, 2BR can sleep 6, can be very resaonable. Comes with fireplace and full kitchen and right across the street from the hot tubs and swimming pool. About 100 yds to the lifts so you can walk or take the condo shuttle.

My favorite spots are Moran Face right off the Casper lift. There is one of those warning signs as you enter the traverse so most people avoid it, but in reality it's basically intermediate level skiing. One of my other fav trails is Beavertooth, it's on the trailmap but I have yet to meet anyone who can find it other than a longtime local.

The tram will be gone but to be honest unless you want to watch people jumping into Corbet's or do Rendezvous Bowl there is plenty of skiing below the bowl.

In addition to checking out Targhee or doing Snow King, referred to as the "steepest little bastard in the west" by SKI mag, you can take a sleighride in the middle of 10,000 elk or check out Yellowstone for a day...it's an amazing place in the winter.

JH is amazing. Based on your level, take the gondi up and hike... otherwise, ski down and over to the quad. From there, enjoy the bowls there for a few runs and keep making your way around... IT'S A BLAST.

For Dinner, DEFINATELY hit the SNAKE RIVER GRILL. You have to take a cab into town, but it will be the best food out west you have ever had. Aside from that, do the typical Mangy Moose (good BBQ) and Solitude Cabin (requires reservations and includes a sleigh ride).

From what others said above, DEFINATELY do Grand Targhee. The snow is champaign powder all over the mountain... AND, if you want to front some extra money do the CAT skiing.
