IMO, you're going to have a big problem with crowding on that narrow shoulder of the mtn if/when the quad coming up from the base of West Bowl is installed.

I dont see this expansion bringing in hoards of people. Jay is a niche resort. If you ask 100 skiers/riders on the street of you town/city if they have ever heard of Jay Peak I would bet only 1 in 10 would say they have heard of it (unless you are from Vermont, Montreal or Ottowa). And even less will have ever visited it. The Jay expansion is going to be good for Jay skiers/riders and may bring in a few new faces but not the masses IMO.

Jay is a powder skiers mountain. An expert/advanced ability mountain. And that filters out alot of potential visitors. Those customers would rather drive less and ski groomers.

I am more worried this expansion will hurt Jay financially and force it into bankrupcy or chapter 11. I hope they proceed with baby steps.

Now if we were talking about Burke, I would agree. But Jay is a media machine. They are advertising in SKI, SKIING, etc. and they are mentioned quite a bit in articles and pictures in all magazines. I don't think they are unknown. Gauging interest in here, in other rooms, and from talking with folks in the Boston area, MANY folks know about Jay and its reputation is growing. I know MANY folks from Southern NE and NY who drove the distance to ski Jay. And in my lifetime, Jay has grown SO much.

Very true, but the diehards are coming en masse.

If the future is anything like the past, the development will be slloooowwwww and steady. They advertised the golf course for like 20 years before it actually began. The HSQ was a long time in the making. And this West Bowl has been in the works for at least four years. So they are methodical and I don't think they will act with haste. I don't think you are giving Stenger as much credit as he deserves...he knows what he is doing.

No way Hound, it's legendery for the amount of snow it gets, lots of skiers/riders in the East have heard of it. I'm not saying they're all going to make the trip up, but they've heard of it.

i agree that jay is a powder skiers mountain, an expert/advanced mountain. but how can you account for all the people that go to jay to ski groomers? jay sucks for groomers, it is just not very intermediate friendly, imo, compared to other northern NH/VT areas. i think a lot of people of heard about jay, definitely more than 1 in 10. and i think its reputation for getting so much snow brings out both powder skiers and non-powder skiers, especially on powder days. on non-powder days, not so much.

i don't think the expansion would hurt jay at all though, it certainly isn't going to bring a mass of people to jay. certainly traffic will increase, it always does when an area expands. but the expansion looks so vast that they will add far more acres of terrain than people to fill it. overall, that expansion looks like an amazing win for jay skiers, especially those that feel jay has blown up recently. the amount of lifts planned for that expansion is beyond belief, i hope they have the finances to pull that entire plan off.

Jay has always been a great expert mountain. With the addition of the Metro Quad I think they even offer a good beginner market. As for the intermediate market Jay does suck and Jay management knows it.

The West Bowl is meant to fill that hole in intermediate terain. Just about all the terain over there is going to be geared toward the intermediate skier. Most trails will be intermediate with glades in between them. This will fill the big hole and be alot more appealing to your average group of skiers. Whether that will be enough to draw a mass of people to Jay. I hope not. Only time will tell and in Jay time that can be awhile.

Funny thing is most of the people on my Ski Team have never heard of it... maybe becasue they are mostly racers and not hardcore skiers... but still.

"Yeah I was up at Jay Peak in Waist deep powder over February Vacation"
"Really? Where is that? Colorado"
"Yes it is... "

What's the latest status on the Jay expansion? It's been "proposed" on the jay trail map almost 10 years
