Jay Peak Valentines Blizzard trip 2/14,15,16 With pics and video!
Alright folks, I know this is a bit late but i've been very busy.
Date: 2/ 14,15,16 2007
Resort: Jay Peak Vermont
Conditions: Powder up to your armpits!!!!
Trip Report:
I Got to Jay around 3:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon and the place looked deserted. I dropped my stuff of at the http://www.snowlinelodge.com and headed up to the Golden Eagle to have a few libations while I waited for my friend to arrive from Conneticut.
I would guess it started snowing in the wee hours of Wednesday morning , maybey between 2am and 4 am as I got up and checked for snow like a kid checking for gifts from Santa Clause on Christmas Eve.
Well it WAS like christmas when we woke up because it was snowing pretty good and there was absolutely NO WIND!
Conditions in the mornig were powder powder powder with occasional powder. The glades were getting choked with snow and most of the bones are well covered.
The snow in the woods was deep and getting deeper by the minute.
Fresh lines were everywhere as the place was pretty empty.
The wind was nonexistant until about 1:30pm when it picked up like someone flipped a light switch. By 2pm it was dumping out and life was good.
I would guess they got about 16 inches during operating hours on Wednesday. This was a car in the parking lot about 7pm.
This is a picture of my buddy's truck Thursday morning that diddnt have a flake on it when he parked it on Tuesday night.
Thursdays report from Jay was 60 inches of snow. Like it has been posted in several other reports, I dont know if it was really 60" but they got a sh!tload of snow and most of it came down sideways.
While we waited for the Red(Bonnaventure) chair to open we wwere in the Tram caffeteria, the guy who runs the Mountain Adventure program grabbed his gear, went up to the second floor, climbed out a window onto the roof, climbed to the peak and placed his skis on top of the chimeny where he clicked in( in the middle of a 45mph wind) and jumped off into a snowdrift in between the caff and the hotel Jay. This is a pic of him after he landed and sunk up to his shoulders. He is the guy in yellow, the other dude is his friend that helped dig him out.
Here is a link to the Jay website showing the jump http://www.jaypeakresort.com/en/jay_peak/990/
When the Red chair finally opened we found skiing to be very difficult due to the super dense quality of the windpacked snow. You would have to find the steepest angles, get wayyyy in the backseat and just straightline downhill.
I diddnt take many pics on thursday or friday because it was extremely cold and windy. In fact I got some minor frostbite on my face, one finger and several toes which still lack feeling as I write this.
Highlights on Friday were getting the third chair up the Blue(Jet) chair after waiting a half hour in the freezing cold. But first tracks down Timbuctu was the reward I was waiting for. The skiing was actually a little better friday than thursday but wednesday was the best day in my opinion.
It was a GREAT trip and Jay got friggin pasted!
