My New Year's resolution: less lurking, more posting!

So I'm up in Stockbridge, Mass over the weekend. I had gotten my wife x-country skis for Christmas and we were going to try them out on Mon. When we went to bed at 12:30, there was maybe one inch on the ground. We wake up at 7:30 and there's a foot in the backyard! Change in plans, we are going to Jiminy. I'm kinda bummed because if I had realized it was going to snow this much, I would have gotten up much earlier to get fresh tracks. No worries. I left my snowboard at home any way. I always board in the pow, so by the time I get there, it will be mostly tracked out and it will be easier for me to ski.

We pull into the parking lot at 11:00, and I see cars leaving. There has been a power outage in the area and no lifts are running! They say that they hope to get it back by 12:00. I don't know if I should believe them. I consider my options. Butternut being the closed 55 minutes away, I figure I'll stick around.

To avoid a riot, Jiminy says lift tix $35 when the juice comes on. Lo and behold, at 11:45 the lights come back on and we are back in business! After the longest ticket line ever, we hit the hill at 1:00.

The last time I skiied fresh snow was 5 inches at Killington in 2002. I did so poorly that I swore at lunch that I would quit skiing and just snowboard. My girlfriend talked me down from the ledge and convinced me not to stop skiing.

Well, now she is my wife and she is giving me a mini powder lessen on the first run. We start off on Easy Does It. lots of fresh powder on the sides of the trail. She tells me to bounce up and down to get the feel for the fluff. Feels great! Feet together, bank the skis, long gradual turns; hey this works! We head to Out To Sea to the Hot Wheels Glades. I can't believe I'm skiing powder!

Next run is steeper, Panorama. Very fluffy, awesome. Third run is Noreaster. I let the skis stay in the fall line longer, and I start picking up speed. I want to slow scrub speed, but don't know how in powder. So I just let the skis go and hang on. Amazingly, I don't fall. By the time I get back to the triple, I am whooping and screaming!

Fourth run, back to Out to Sea to Noreaster to the Hot Wheel Glades. I am feeling confident, so we head to Wild Turkey. Nice powder bumps the whole way down. My wife heads for lunch, and I do 2 runs on Whitetail. Powder on the edge of the trail, but scrapey bumps in the middle. I head in for lunch.

When we head out again at 5:00, the snow is only been skiied on for 5 hours. Warm up on West Way to Grand Slam. Take the double for three laps on Ace of Spades. Packed powder, nice long swooping turns.

North Glade has some powder bumps with scrape in the troughs. We are pretty beat and decide to call it a day.

I can't believe that one of my most enjoyable powder days took place on skis and not a snowboard.

How were the crowds? We were there on the 28th and it was so crowded it completely killed any possible enjoyment.

Pretty much why I don't care to go there this year. I was there last year basically every other week, but the crowds were just too much.

I really lucked out. The power outage must of scared away many people. I used the 6 pack to start the day, less than 10 minute wait. The rest of the afternoon on the widow's white quad and the whitetail quad had no lines.
