Resort or Ski Area: Jiminy Peak

Conditions: MGPP

Trip Report:

My girlfriend treated me to this place this year for my birthday (even though I paid for most of it). The terrain isn't the most desirable, but the ski and stay package is very reasonable. Around $200 per night and that comes with 2 anytime tickets from 9am on 2/6 - to 10pm on 2/9. This little mountain makes for a nice mid week vacation.

We arrived around 4:00 of the 6th, right at check in time. I ended up purchasing a new pair of boots from the ski shop and unknowingly met with Hawkshot99 as he was working at the shop that night. He's a well of knowledge and really knows his stuff. I was very happy to have met him.

The conditions the whole week were great. Jiminy gets a bad wrap of being an icy hill, which it usually is, but the temperatures were mild, which made for some fairly soft and loose snow. Crowds were non existent except for Wednesday. They had an e-coupon day, so it filled in a little more. Night skiing at Jiminy is alright, there is only one advanced trail lit, but we were the only ones on that advanced trail as the majority of night skiers and riders stick to the main intermediate trails and parks. It gets fairly congested with the ski clubs and such, but that's what the bars are for.

We spent most of the week on the steeps. Whirlaway, Wild Turkey, Whitetail all skied like a dream. Cutter is usually a bump run, but there has been nothing seeded this season. It seemed like we were the only ones on these trails the whole week. Jericho was very fast but had excellent snow. A carver's dream. My girlfriend was happy to have executed her first double diamond rated trail, though I had to tell her it's more like a single so she doesn't think she can bomb down every double rated trail.

They starting blowing snow on Tuesday night and didn't stop until Thursday morning. While I don't like skiing through snow machines, it was great to see the mountain try to keep their trails up in such a horrible season.

Overall the skiing was superb given the season, the best skiing I've had this year. The hotel staff at Jiminy are extremely friendly. It was a very pleasant vacation. I look forward to doing it again.

should support my home state areas more...went out a few years ago to Berkshire East and had a great time but haven't been back.

How are the weekend crowds at Jiminy?

In a normal year - about as bad or worse than you will find at any mountain.

I haven't been there on a weekend in a long time. I remember the longest lift line being maybe 15-20 minutes at the speed chair a few years ago. The other smaller lifts aren't nearly as crowded, but they take a lot longer to get to the top, so its probably a wash in that scenario. It's kind of a small mountain for the volume of people they bring in on the weekends. Best skiing is mid week like any other hill.

I skied Jiminy this past Sunday. The parking lots and lodges were packed, but because of the cold and wind the slopes were uncrowded. I never had to wait for more than 3 people in the singles line for the Express and it looked like it would have been less than a 5-minute wait at any time for the groups. Conditions were good, almost everything open which makes it a good value this year even at $61. Another time I skied a Sunday with better weather, the lines were longer so I rode the triple and the Whitetail Quad which had no lines. Another advantage of these lifts is that they are closer to the trails, the triple to the blue trails on the west side and the Whitetail to the expert trails, saving you several hundred feet of poling or skating along the flat summit compared to the Express. The triple serves the full vertical drop, and the quad starts a hundred feet or so above the base, helping you avoid crowds.

Agreed for sure. The Triple is a tough ride for me unless the 6 Pack is very crowded - but the Q1 Quad and even the Grand Slam chair are where it's at!
