Resort or Ski Area: Killington

Conditions: Powder and crusty powder.

Trip Report: A lot of anticipation had been building up all week long to this weekend. And as I expected, it wasn't exactly what was expected. We arrived in Killington Saturday morning to 18" of fresh snow. Normally, this would be reason to rejoice, but in this case it was mixed. We started our day on North Star, figuring this is a trail that doesn't normally see grooming, it didn't nice fresh powder all the way. However, there was also some ice and rocks poking through, I heard reports that this trail suffered from the weather this past week, that was no lie. Next we did Vagabond, a bit better, nice pow all the way down and no rocks or ice. The one problem we did experience most of the morning was a light mist was falling and as it hit your goggle, it imediately froze. You couldn't go more than 300 feet without having to have to stop and wipe off your goggles. Also this mist caused a crust of ice to build up on the powder that had fallen throughout the night. At one point I was going down Highline and noticed some nice untouched powder off to the right. I had the Apache Chiefs on and figured this would be great for floating. Turn into the "pow" no problem, skis floated to the top real nice. Next as I initiate a turn in the "powder", I catch an edge and fly face first at high speed, didn't realize there was a nice crust on top of the snow.

Now for the good news. With all the crust and the mist falling and freezin on our goggles, we decided the the trees would be a good solution. We changed skis and hit some tree runs. Up until now, I never did any marked tree runs in Killington, yesterday we tried a few. We did Patsy's, Low Rider, and Squeeze Play. We werent' sorry, the trees were the place to be yesterday. All nice soft powder and no mist freezing on our goggles. Also, found some great runs that we never did before. After playing in the trees for a bit, we did lunch and then took the Superstar Quad up to the top of Skype. We though about doing Superstar but when V saw ice coming through we decided to pass and did a combination of blue runs down. Fourway, Bittersweet, etc. They were all nice with soft bumps. Unfortunetly, at this point after doing bumps all day, our legs were burning, so one run down and we called it a day. Next day we hit Pice, this was a pleasant suprise, powder galore! Pico report up next :)
