Killington 1/27
Cold 15 degrees, 30 mph wind, blue sky, NO Clouds, & No lift lines!
Groomed Packed powder & Powder stashes in trees
We went up to Killington on Friday, 1/27 w/ a 2 for 1 ticket. It only cost $34.50 to ski! I picked up a new friend Tinnerdelux at the exit 37 park & ride on rt 91... 2.5 hours later we were at the K-1 lodge @ 8:00am. Its nice being one of the first 10 autos in the lot. After a coffee and getting dressed we took our first run promptly at 9:00am and meet up w/ M@ & Django who drove over from NH who found some traffic on the way. The weather was almost perfect... No clouds, blue sky, 15 dregrees, but w/ a 30 mph wind, & No lift lines! You could still find corduroy groomed trails in the afternoon, barely touched.
The view from the summit was spectacular! You could see for 50+ miles...
M@ showed us where Coopers Cabin was, its a hut for those hiking the Long Trail. The cabin is about 100 yards OB in the woods somewhere that I couldn't find again w/ a map & directions. There was about a foot of fresh pow in those trees, and very tight to ski. Getting out of OB was a chore, somehow I ended up on my back w/ my skis pointed straight up, and having to punch out in order to get up. When I tried to get up the first time, my boot sunk well into the snow... up over my knee. I'm 6'3" and it was deep! The guys loved it, but I just wanted out... too tight for my comfort. The best place to ski was Bear peak because the sun had softened up the snow and not as windy. We should have been over there all day. They were blowing snow on Outer Limits & Upper Superstar all day long.
They were only blowing snow on those two trails from what I could tell. Superstar was powdery in the afternoon w/ wind blown snow. I have no actual beta on OL, as I did not ski it. But it looks like they've got a ton of snow piled high on both trails.
There were powder stashes all over the place... I saw a group of people from the lift going through "unmarked-off trail" trees at least a foot deep. There were some quality poaching opportunities to be had...
I called it quits at 1:30, my legs had had it for a first day... I'm still hobbling 2 days later (out of shape)! The vicotin worked well Friday night!
On gear note, my Atomic M:EX's were great, but you have to keep an edge the entire time or the ski will wobble. I also detuned the edges 2" from where the ski meets the snow w/ a gummistone I picked up at a local ski shop. I did that on both the inside and outside edges.
