I decided to get away for the weekend and use my two 2 for 1 coupons to Killington before they expire at Xmas. Headed up Friday after a long work week, flurries in the air after crossing into VT on 89, snow falling and on the ground as I passed Skyeship Base. Stayed at Mountain Sports Inn, nice place, great price.
Saturday 12/11
Place was pretty packed with people, but there were not many lift lines except for K1. Started with a run off K1 then moved over to the Superstar Quad. The top of superstar was open with lots of large ungroomed whales. Bittersweet skied really good, probably run of the day, under the snowguns. Ramshead was nice and uncrowded perfect for some high speed carving. North ridge had a decent crowd on it but the conditions held up well there. Snowdon was a bit of a dissappointment as the only real top to bottom way down was Chute becasue of the racing on Bunny Buster and Highline, and the park on Mouse Run. Ended up with 25 runs and called it a day around 3:00.
Sunday 12/12
The big talking point on the lift rides and in the bar Saturday was what was going to happen with the weather Sunday. I knew it was a gamble to pick this weekend based on the forecast, but the gamble payed off. Woke up to find it snowing hard with 1" on the ground already. It snowed until about 11:00 when it started to change to freezing rain. Overall accumulation was about 3" around most of the mountain with maybe 4-5" at the peak. It started to rain at 1:00. I was soaked and had enough at 1:30, so I hit the road to make it back home to see most of the Pats game.
But from opening till 11:00 was excellent skiing. almost everything skied great and there were no crowds, The forecast scared off a lot as there were less than half the people as Saturday. Run of the day was Timberline, which they had just finished making snow on, nobody seemed to know it was open as I lapped it a few times and still could make untracked lines in the 2-3" of new snow. Upper Skyelark was also excellent a close 2nd place. Spent most of the day doing laps on the Superstar and Ramshead Quads. Northridge and Canyon chairs were closed do to the winds. K1 was running but the visibility was so poor up at the peak that I only did two runs off the gondola. Ended with 20 runs, and soaking wet.
Overall a good first weekend trip after the warm up session I had at Wawa last weekend. Good on Killington for giving out a lot of 2 for 1 discounts this early season, I ran into a lot of people who had the coupons.
