Area: Killington

Date: February 20, 2010

Weather: SNOW!! Then a little of everything....

Surface Conditions: Read Below

Pretty psyched to ski Killington in the middle of winter in a long long time, and my girlfriend was happy as this was her first time visiting the Beast of the East. The original plan was to go to Pico Peak today and tomorrow and K on Saturday. But the roads (especially Route 4), are still in rough shape and I did not want to travel over Shelbourne Pass. We'll see about tomorrow for the Peak.

Arrived at K-1 Lodge at 8 and picked up our passes. Lifts were on wind hold until 9:15 or 9:30, booooo. So there we sat until a skier told us that the Snowdon Quad was operating, he stated he was a local and that that lift always runs. Okay! We're off! First run was down Chute, the POW was heavy but manageable, took a turn down Great Bear and sunk into heavy to my waiste, still moved forward but at a slower pace. Moved over to skiers left and rose above the snow. Pointed the skis downward and got caught on a left turn, sunk, and thump into the snow. Very comfy fall, some difficulty getting up! Second run off of Snowdon down Bunny Buster, six to eight inches of blown snow, nice to carve through. Down Mouse Trap, around 18" to just lean back and fly. Which I didn't do the first time down MT and bogged myself down five turns into it.

Word was out that other peaks were openig up. North Ridge Triple to K-Peak and over to Bear Mountain. The traverse was a little painful with sleet hitting your face. Bear Trax to Bear Claw to the lower part of Wildfire. Now this was fun!! Not too many tracks and legs were now conditioned to the snow and Wildfire was awesome. A workout still but a blast to go down! Up Bear Mountain Quad and down Outer Limits, yep, our legs were ready for that :-o, it wasn't the steepness or the submerged bumps, this snow was heavy. Every turn was work, and for the first half of the trail that was fun, the lower got more challenging as fatigue set in. Quick snack, and up Skye Peak.

Gave our legs a break and went down Skyeburst, and then Skyeburst to The Norway. Couple more runs off that lift and we went back to the top on the K-1 Gondi. Word was Superstar was in great shape. It was, and with no one on it! On the way to Superstar the glades of Julio looked awesome. Next trip into the trees, and we got seperated immediately. I stayed further to the side and ended up on someone's stash. This was a good run! I'll guess one or two people went down it before I did at around 1:30. Not wide and some steep chutes, whoever has this stash, good job and thank you! Next run was down Julio proper with gf, and she was right, great coverage!

By now the snow had turned over to sleet and freezing rain, and we were pretty soaked. Time to call it a day and have some Casey wings. More tomorrow!

I know, DHS, but I was nervous to bring the camera because of the forecast. Snow is one thing, everything else thrown at it is another. Should've brought one of my 'cheaper' camaras.
