Date(s) Skied: Saturday March 11
Resort or Ski Area: Killington
Conditions: Packed powder, wet granular, some slush
Trip Report: As we drove up the access road to the K-1 lodge, I was shocked at what lay in front of us. I've seen Killington with better coverage in April. Late April.

But despite a quickly-dropping trail count (ski reports I saw had them with 166 of 200 on Friday, 136 on Saturday and 117 on Sunday), my wife, two sons and I had a blast there.

We started by taking the gondola to Killington Peak, then spent a solid hour on Great Eastern from top to bottom (many stops, obviously). The Skyeship took us back up, and a fun but hard-working jaunt through some thick snow on a sun-dappled Skye Lark had us ready for lunch after only two runs!

After an early lunch, we took Great Northern from Killington Peak to Snowdon, then rode the Snowdon triple a few times for sweet runs on Bunny Buster and Mouse Run. My wife needed a break because her boots were killing her (they're gone after this season), so my sons and I stayed on Snowdon for a few more runs, including my older son's first black diamond, Mouse Trap.

We ended with another long cruise on Great Eastern, finishing up back at K-1 just after the lifts closed.

There was a lot of crunchy stuff, and some wet spots, too, but our boys' first "big mountain" was a really cool time. They deserved the steaks we chowed at Sirloin Saloon in Rutland afterward.

Question: Has anyone stayed at the Cortina Inn on Rt. 4? Would love to know other impressions of it.

I have stayed at Cortina Inn Extensively since about 1985. It is a fairly nice place and is roughly split between the old original inn (1964?) and the new addition built around 1990 which has rooms with fireplaces and more modern decor (also higher rates). New owners took over the place around 2001 and the place has slipped a bit as far as service/food quality and decor facility are concerned, but it is still a nice place and is convenient to Killington/Pico.

The inn had the first indoor pool in Vermont and it is still a nice place to relax after skiing and has a hottub/whirlpool located next to the swimming pool, as well as a large sauna. There are two restauants on premesis and they do a really nice sunday brunch.

The $100-$125 rates that are advertised on Travelocity, etc would be located in the old part of the inn, and are still nice if a bit small.

We were wondering what the conditions were going to be like after this week. We're thinking about heading up there on Sat. Still not quite sure yet though, we'll have to wait and see.....

Cold and Windy, as to be expected.

Still alot of double diamonds closed but if you can avoid major ice spots(plainly visible) you should be ok. The top layer is good its just the thick ice lying underneath on certain trails. on some less sun exposed runs you'll find it to be medium hardness. They certainly are making snow and grooming alot tonight so you should have fun.
