Killington 4/21 (Edited with a few Pics)

Date(s) Skied: 4/21/07

Resort or Ski Area: Killington, VT

Conditions: Spring, Temps in 60's

Trip Report:

Wow is all I can say. Today was by far the best day of spring skiing I have ever had. I can't remember the mountain looking this good so late... my day consisted of a not skiing one trail twice. I did not get up there this year when there was decent snow so I wanted to hit the goods before the year was over.

Arrived around 8:30 and scored a nice spot on the access road just below Superstar Quad. A quick walk over and I was heading up for a warmup on Superstar.... then I jetted across to the Snowdon Quad. I took runs down Great Bear, Vagabond, and Northstar. Northstar was awesome... nice soft bumps and plenty of snow. Patsies (woods) still plenty of snow, but too many pine needles and other debris from the wind storms down.

After these 3 runs I bailed back to Superstar for one more before the 10AM K-zone meet-up. I went across and came down the Ovation headwall, to Old Superstar, and back to Lower Ovation. Lower O shouldn't have been open, but it was... haven't been on it since 2005. Great pitch...

Met up with some KZoners and we went over to Needles. Took a run down part of Needle's Liftline and most of Vertigo. Hugeeeee nice bumps. Then we hit up Thimble and Needle's Eye - awesome. Did Upper Dreammaker down to Bear Trap... very nice. Up Skye Peak and down a very mashy Outer Limits... I forgot how damn unrelenting that run is when the bumps are huge. One is enough for me...

After this I said good bye to the Zoners and went to my truck for some lunch. After lunch I went up to the Canyon. I skied Catwalk from the top, Heavenly Traverse, West Glade, Powerline, East Fall, Cascade, Escapade, Flume, Double Dipper, Royal Flush. Best runs for me were Cascade and Escapade/Flume.....Cascade was nice and flat and Escapade had awesome bumps. It was awesome that they were running the Canyon Quad today, that's where it was all at.

After a ton of runs there I rode K1 up and went over the top down to South Ridge. Did Jug and Jug Handle. Not much traffic over there today.... tons of snow on both runs. The run-out on Falls Brook was torture.... Only one run for me there.... wanted to hit Pipe Dream and Breakaway though they looked shweeeeettt.

Then took a lap on Wildfire top to bottom... back up and down Skylark (awesome bumps) to K1 for one last run. Wanted to hit Conclusion but was closed. Highline would have to do.... nice bumps here too. And my legs were falling off...

Well that's about it. Clocked around 25 runs total....non-stop skiing from 8:30 to 4 besides a short lunch. With a day like this just didn't want to waste time... It was amazing to see K run so many lifts and it was greatly appreciated.

I can't reiterate enough how awesome conditions where. :) I was about to post a report, but yours totally sums it up. Total of 125 runs open I believe was the count.

Only *1* slight annoyance..

If a lift is going to be closed, and that lift happens to be the ONLY GD WAY OUT, Mark it somehow, puhlease? :) I had a half an hour walk for part of today getting out after not noticing the ramshead lift wasn't running.

Oh, added note. The pond skimming was rescheduled to Sunday due to a leak in the pool emptying it.

There was a way out.....Snowshed Double was running. Go through the tunnel, and you'll be pretty much at it.

Thanks for the report! I was at K today too. I would've posted to AlpineZone or checked out for a meet-up, except I didn't find out until 8pm last night that someone was willing to go, so without having any time to check my computer, I had to pack, rent a car, and get on the road, so I could at least get there by 2am. Last minute ski trips are fantastic, but it would've been cool to meet up with some more AZers. Well maybe next winter (or the way we are going, this winter :) )

Miller beat me to it... Yup.. you can go down Ram's Head and just duck under the road and grab the Snowshed double... actually today was the first I'm ever ridden that lift. Usually go on the HSQ when its open...

Trailboss, I didn't see a real bad bare spot on any of the snowmaking trails. And some of the lower angle natural runs still aren't showing ground.

Hehe, wish I knew that before I assumed I had to walk. :) Thanks for the info. :)

I'm assuming they're going to lose a WHOLE lot of cover this week. Maybe they'll be open next week, but I'm assuming it's going to be spotty.

Yup. One day more and we'd have been without Royal Flush, Conclusion, Lower Ovation, Upper Vertigo I think, and perhaps others.

Best damn spring skiing I had in a long time. Hung around with AndyZ and his wife and skiid endless bump runs in 76 degree temps, maybe hotter. The snow on Superstar was so deep you could spray it over you're head. Forgot how much I liked the place. The Canyon area was just loaded with bumps. Outer Limits on Sunday was a real workout as well as upper Ovation. Amazing 2 days.
