2007 Trip Report #: 59
Resort: Killington
Conditions: Corn and bumps.
Weather: Sun and clouds. Temps in the 70's-80’s.
Trip Report: The lifts are closed, but TB is not done. Hiking season is still going. It was time for my annual pilgrimage to Outer Limits for some great turns and to do some paddling afterwards on nearby Woodward Reservoir (aka the water source for K-mart’s snowmaking). I pulled into Bear and parked outside the gates since there were just some employees in the lot and I did not want to get locked in:
The temp was just right to ski!
I hiked in and found the maintenance crew having lunch. They gave me a wave and watched as I walked up to the snow and took off the sandals and got on the boots. The snow was edge-to-edge on the lower glacier…which offered a solid 5-600 vert or so…it was at least the bottom half of the trail. I decided to do laps on this stretch since the upper snow looked not worth the hike:
It was about ten minutes to Space Walk and may another ten to the top of this patch. Very doable and very easy hiking…I set up a bootpack on the left side of the run.
The view from my perch:
After a break, I stepped into my skis and set down the steep fall line. Soft corn snow and some melting bumps. It was a nice first run. The thing that always gets me on this trail (when I have hiked it) is how you start down the fall line with little or no real warmup. This year I had a good launch area that was a bit flatter than last year’s.
At the bottom, I strapped the skis on and did another lap. Not a long hike up, and a good run down. I did skier’s left this time and found some deep, soft, corn. Amazing and all to myself.
I did one more hike up and ski down…this time staying to the middle of the trail and skiing all the way down. No grass, no rocks, just snow and bumps. The base is really deep…on far skier’s right it is measured in the feet still. Watch out for some small crevasses beginning to open on skier’s left. Also watch out for the down HKD tower/pipe at the bottom.
Three good runs in less than two hours…not bad. Some other pics:
My tracks:
Skiing short skis in shorts!
Very satisfied customer!
I left at 1:15 pm or so and drove down the mountain and down Route 100 to the Woodward Reservoir for some nice paddling. It was surprisingly busy and I got up close to the resident Loon!
