Bumpity-bump-bump...

Just wanted to see what the latest on the knee is, Dork. Having become a recent member of the blown-knee club, I'm getting encouragement from some of these replies.

In my case, its a ruptured acl, broken tibia, and broken femur. I see that most of the injuries here were torn acls, anyone else have one rupture? Pat, I think you might've?

I've had both knees completely torn and repaired but not sure if that is what you mean by rupture. It'll be fine, the biggest hurdle is mental. Once you get back on skis, i found myself being real cautious. still am even 7 years after the last one.

I'll 2nd that on the mental hurdle. In March 06 I took a bad fall at Sugarloaf, cartwheeled 15 times and ended up with a shattered right tibia (tibial plateau fracture). The surgeon in Farmington told me I'd never ski again and advised I take up golf :-o . I spent a month in the hospital and another four months non-weight-bearing, and now have two titanium plates and 11 screws in my leg. My first time back on the snow was new years day at SR. I've gotten in 16 days so far this season, going to Cannon Monday and the week after next is the "Return to Broke Leg Mountain" (Sugarloaf) for a week. I'm skiing as good or better than before, including black diamond trails.

Don't let anybody tell you you can't ski again. Perseverance and determination.

A rupture ,essentially, is a complete tear, in that the acl is in 2 pieces. There is nothing left connecting the tibia to the femur. Yeah, think I'll be sticking to the groomers next year. Its a good thing though, means more time spent with the family.

Awesome, that's what I like to hear. Thanks!

yeah, dont let people tell you that you cant do something. Plus those doctors dont know much anyways. At least thats my experience after being told numerous times i couldnt compete anymore (had a few operations done).

stick with the rehab, it sucks but what can ya do?

MRI says:

1) No torn ACL

2) Partially torn MCL

3) Torn meniscus (thats where all the pain is)

4) Hairline fracture of tibia.

Doc wants to see the films. So far no mention of surgery. Keep exercising it. Also bike and swim.

Couldn't agree more. I was told that post-op my knee should be even stronger than it ever was. 8)

Lucky bastich....

I've been walking on it (with a immobilizer, of course) and I flex the knee a few times a day. The best thing about a rupture is that there is no way to damage it any further. Its about as busted as busted can be. Need to wait for the bones to heal before surgery, though. I'd like to get it going as soon as possible, but, what can you do?

your glass is half-full!!
it seems you won't need ligament reconstruction
hairline fractures heal quickly, only the tissues surrounding it take a while
if you need arthroscopy for the meniscus, it is not as bad as ligament reconstruction!!

I agree with above posters, would take a knee injury over shoulder any day. I am 8 months out for ACL and having no problems. Weights, running, skiing, biking nothing really bothers it. One thing I learned how to do alot more of is stretch. As my surgeon said, everyone is different. Some never ski again, some go on to be stronger.

My advice would be to work on it, take it slow and build it up again. Your body will tell you when you had enough and when you are ready to go again.

yeah, i assume that it is the medial meniscus thats torn. Its attached to the MCL and often when you tear one you tear the other. Last tear I had was on my lateral side. went in fixed it and was out again in 2 weeks. but that was only a meniscus :p

hope it all goes well and enjoy the painkillers :)
