I have been surprised that in pictures of training that she was not wearing a brace under her suit to support the repaired knee. She has been training a lot but skiing like she does really pounds on the knees and legs!

Unofficial Networks has a twitter picture of her being helped out of the finish area at Copper. She was walking with assistance in the picture. Much better omen for her recovery than if they just loaded the sled with her in it directly into the ambulance!

A brace adds very little up & down support to the knee. What it does do is keep your knee from over flexing forward & maybe a little lateral protection.

I tore my ACL and ski with a brace - definitely helps keep the knee stabilized! I have not experienced any terrible crashes either though! But Wes Welker wore a brace when returning to football and he gets all wrapped up and twisted!

I heard it was a partial tear of her repaired knee.

Btw, a brace does not help if you have no acl. I know from experience.

Bracing evidence is all over the place. With a bum knee looking at a 3rd surgery at some point I researched a bit.

AAOS largely notes it should be decided on a case by case basis... The rationale is sound but the clinical evidence is largely lacking. In theory the brace should help lessen some of the forces that can lead to ACL/MCL problems and offer some semblance of mechanical protection. If you have elasticity because of a deficient ACL there has been some evidence of benefits, same with prophylactic protection.

A brace ace may work for a partial tear. It really depends on the amount of movement in the knee.

My knee doctor/surgeon is one of the best in the business (yeah, I now, everyone says this about their doctors, but his accolades speak for themselves), and he says braces are about 30% effective for people without ACL's. Basically his opinion is that they do have a small benfit in protecting against further damage and I believe him. It seems obvious to me that they have benefits when the knee is stressed in certain ways, but their overall effectiveness is certainly a contentious subject, and only offer a small amount of protection.

A brace can not change physiology as far as I know. Our ligaments are contributors to our proprioception, that nerve regeneration can take up to a year depending on what you what read. In combo with athletes pushing the envelopes on phase based rehab protocols and this is what happens unfortunately. Feel bad for her, hopefully she will take the time now to recover and come back strong.

My knee after surgery is very tight - sometimes I think too tight. I get it checked periodically and my doctor is happy with it after 2.5 years. If I work out or am active without my brace then I often experience after effects. When I have my knee brace of it seems to limit that experience. The brace is not a big deal and I would rather have the 10, 20 30 % added benefit!

I have also read that it talks about one to two years for the new ligament to regenerate but it depends on whether it is a cadaver or your own ligament.

I read that she has been reluctant about wearing the knee brace but has been for the most part. I think that she was starting to push it too soon. Competing at that level has to be hard on the knee! Hoping she recovers!

Ligaments do in regenerate. They scar over and tighten up. This is why a partial MCL tear/strain does not require surgery. The ACL can not do this for simplicifcation, it is in a fliud. I wore a brace before my fourth surgery which was the reconstruction and would pop the knee regularly playing hockey and when a caught a ski tip that rotated the knee. I even popped it a few months after the initial injury picking the underear out of my ass. I went down to the ground in a heap. It only helps so much with no ACL and it helps in preventation of a tear that is why you see lineman in college football wearing them. I have not worn a brace at all since the reconstruction. It should not be needed if the repair and rehab is done correctly. The graft also determines recovery time and strength of the repair

Patella tendon for the graft is the strongest but the longest recovery time
Hamstring tendon is the weakest but fastest recovery.
