So, I try hard to maintain clear divisions between various aspects of my online existence. I do have a LinkedIn account, but I've never given it access to my address book, and it certainly never connects to here. Today, I was browsing through connections, and got into the"People you may know" section.

2nd name on the list: Brian Vibert. I've never emailed Brian, I don't think we've ever even PM'd here.

Crazy, huh? Unfortunately, the site doesn't give a way to figure out how it thinks you would know someone. We dont' even have any shared connections.

I've work with the LinkedIn team - we help them deal with the vast amounts of data that gets generated from their website.

They can use your information AND your connection's information to figure out people whom you may know..
Skiing could be a factor... Type of work... all kinds of stuff...

Crazy algorithms updated constantly by Data Scientist - the make big $$$$$$$!!!!!

The algorithms do seem to be tons better now than they used to be- good work, dmc!

I don't do Facebook, so LinkedIn's not pulling there. I don't have any interests listed on LinkedIn, and we don't have any shared conections. We're in totally different industries. Same state, I suppose, but that's not a very good filter...

A year ago I was on Facebook, and under "People you may know", my primary care physician was listed. We had no mutual friends in common, I never emailed him, only talked to him over the phone. This is scary.......was he looking me up on the internet while he was logged into Facebook, and Facebook somehow read his cookies?

I disabled my Facebook a couple of days ago, between privacy concerns and spending too much time on it.

If he's a Facebook user and searched for you the data from the search gets recorded... Facebook (worked with them too) tracks everything you do.. From page to page... How long on that page... what you looked at... petabytes of data being generated worldwide and they keep a lot of it.. The people you may know secret sauce is pretty intense and worth millions....

Yeah, I quit believing in 6 degress around the time The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air got popular...

If it is the same bvibert, then it's an impressive connection to make based on info that ought to be available.

privacy is a myth

Why does this infringe on privacy?

LinkedIn is a site for people to Link professionally.. Just like Facebook is for Socially..

You want to be linked with people and it shouldn't be random.

Easiest way to protect all of your information is to not use the internet and if you do use proxies and pseudonyms..

I wouldn't call it an infringement of my privacy. I'm just surprised at the ability for it to make that connection.

I saw a talk by a company that aggregates medical claims data. This info is sold by your insurance company (de-identified of course). This company is hired by pharmaceutical companies to figure out the "early adopter and influential MDs.". Based on claims and referral data they can figure this out. Some MDs work on islands, but some are well connected and peers flow their lead. So pharm will start the marketing with them. It really works. Data has amazing power (frighteningly so)

Wow it's freaky! I almost never use LinkedIn, maybe i should go login and see if it recommends ctenidae for me??

It's really hard to imagine how it made that connection. Maybe someone is trying to tell you to switch careers to the exciting world of process control

I've been working in the marketing data warehouse space for a little over a year now, and it really is amazing the way they can marry what seems like unrelated data together. I was just talking with our internal rep for my client and he was talking about starting to prep for a possible initiative for a scenario like this (names changed to protect the innocent/guilty):

Joe Smith has a an account with BigBankX, but he's not happy with their products/service. He has been bad-mouthing them on Facebook/Twitter. BigBankX wants to be able to capture that data, find out what Joe Smith has for products, what products he is bad-mouthing, pump some data into a campaign tool and then offer Joe Smith some sort of deal on whatever product he is not happy with.

I would imagine this would all be done not only from the information BigBankX collects as part of its own business, but from cookies and other online information on Joe Smith's computer. It really is amazing what can be done. I really hope I can see something like this come to fruition here.
