Date(s) Skied: 12/11/2005

Resort or Ski Area: Loon

Conditions: Groomed fsgr

Trip Report: Coverage was pretty good. Got a little scratchy and skied off in the afternoon. About 50% of the terrain was open. (no blacks) The Kanc Quad, North Quad and the gondola and some smaller lifts were operating. Waits for the Gondola were under 10 minutes and the quads were ski on. A rare uncongested weekend day at Loon (pre Xmas I suppose).

Only problem on the mountain was at the junction of two trails where for some unimaginable reason there was a couple of terrain features. For some reason the kids waiting to hit it thought that the line should string horizontally accross the adjoining trail so every one going that way had to stop and pick their way through. I couldn't find a troller to point this foolishness out to.

All in all a good day to work out the kinks and brush up on technique.

I thought Walking Boss was in very good condition when the sun was on it in the morning. Although none of the trails beneath it were open, the east basin chair was operating...next weekend it appears they should have more terrain open...

Were they making snow on Sunday? the guns were shut down as I arrived on Sat. They were pulling the guns off upper Rampasture as I road the Kanc quad. Looks like the plan is to make snow on Big Dipper to lower Angel st next. The plan seems to be a bit different this year. I skied sat. No lines, no problems.

Loon is usually not busy early season, other than Thankxgiving weekend. The (Mass) of people arrive the Day after Christmas and it gets wild after that.

Lower Walking Boss and Lower picked Rock were the best on Sat. Upper Walking Boss and Lower Bear Claw looked like they were groomed while the snow was still wet, kind of scratchy.

I found about 6 inches of fresh snow on the back deck on friday night. It looks like winter.

thankx for the report.

There wasn't any snowmaking going on Sunday that I could see.

I guess I was mistakenn about the no black comment. I was skiing with my wife so we didn't venture over that way, I was just going off of the online trail conditions for that piece of info. I liked Rampasture, Flying Fox and the stuff serviced by the Kanc on Sunday.

My son reported that sunset/exodus/haulback to lower boss was the best route of the day. He said the cover on upper walking boss was kind of weak.

I agree on the Upper walking Boss evalutation.

Were the features you were not happy with the ones near the base of Governors? I thought they could have been a bit higher up myself. Any time your at Loon and want to grab a run sent me a PM.

I'll keep you in mind the next time I head up.

The features (Bear Island Park) on the Bear Island By-pass just where it intersects with Upper Bear Claw. It may be a good spot for a couple of jumps but I hate to see it on a day when its really busy on the mountain.
