Date Skied: 12/14
Resort or Ski Area: Mad River Glen
Conditions: Packed powder, powder with glaze, ice, wind-blown, water bars
I was only out for a few hours and took a light day, given that it was my first day out for the year, but since there aren't any reports of MRG, I thought I'd share my experience.
There was a little of everything at Mad River today, although the cover was surprisingly good for this early in the year with the up and down weather we've had. We stuck to trails that were either groomed or well-skied, and the few times we hit stuff that hadn't yet been touched, it was very crusty.
Most areas had good cover, although the wind had scoured some places, others needed some more snow, and there were the usual early season suspects: water bars, ice, thin cover, etc. Still, I've skied MRG under worse conditions, and sometimes those worse conditions were in January, so for opening weekend in mid-December, it wasn't bad at all.
I went with my son, Ethan, and since it was out first time out for the year, we took it fairly easy. We skied over to Birdland on the first run, then took the Quackies, then went up the Single for Antelope and Catamount. I had some new skies and boots, and was a bit rusty, but after a few warmup runs, I was feeling good. We did Moody's->Grand Canyon->Bunny->Rockefeller. Some moderate bumps along the way that we enjoyed, but unfortunately, I was also feeling some muscle burn already, so we finished with a couple more easier runs down the double, doing runs off Chipmunk and Loon.
I'm hoping to go to SB and MRG again this week, and hopefully will put in a bit more time.
