Date(s) Skied: Thursday, 3/8/2007, 9:15 am - 1:45 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Mad River Glen, Vermont

Conditions: Crud, powder, packed powder. Light misty snow early, clearing around noon, sunny after noon. Cold (single digits), Breezy.

Trip Report: Well, it's been over two years, but I finally got back to Mad River Glen today. I need to make it a point to hit MRG at least once per season. You can spend days exploring this place. The goal today was to ski some more of the steeper stuff off the single as last time we mostly cruised to mid station and then hit the diamonds at the lower elevations.

My buddy Joe and I took our first run as a warm-up on Antelope-Catamount-Broadway-Bunny. My knee was screaming and I felt an overall feeling of sluggishness from skiing the past 3 days at Sugarbush. We figured the next run was time to hit the diamonds and we started on Catamount Bowl. Nice bumps on an initial steep pitch which quickly mellows. We cruised over to Lynx. Awesome trail! Lightly gladed with many interesting terrain features. Good snow with cruddy bumps.

Joe was having goggle visibility issues so he went in to work that out so I rode to mid-station and hit Upper and Lower Glades. Another awesome lightly gladed run. A bit steeper than Lynx with similar surface. The next run Joe and I hit Chute and then the Glades.

We then tried to ski Fall Line but I guess didn't ski left enough off the entrance from Chute and wound up in some tight (for us) glades. Tons and tons of powder, much of it untracked, but we followed other skier track making for manageable skiing. I wish I skied trees and powder better but it was still a fun adventure. We emerged somewhere near midstation.

Hit Chute again and tried to find another nicely spaced tree skiing we spotted left of Upper Glades, but ended up in more tight trees. Following other skier tracks was a blast today, but it held us up a bit. Still had fun on these little excursions playing around in the powdery woods. Came across a couple really cool chutes (frozen stream beds?). We really had a blast cutting through little wooded areas to connect trails.

Really wish we had someone with us that knew the place well (Eric - we were looking for you in that white jacket you're so self-conscience about... ;)). I've still probably only skied 1/4 of all the trails at MRG after my two short visits. I can see why JimG. wanted to give this place several back to back days to check it out. The day started with low visibility and misty snow (my first visit was during a snowstorm) so I was glad to see the sun come out today to get a better feel for the overall layout.

The place is certainly an expert's dream. Based on the of the skiing I saw today, I feel like an intermediate skier. My knee felt better after 90 minutes or so and I did push myself a bit taking small chutes and drops as well as some of the tightest tree lines I've ever skied, but some of the stuff I saw other skiers hit with ease was impressive. The place makes you want to explore! Also cool to ride the original single during its last year of operation. Great times!

With that, my visit to the MRV is over and I enjoyed 4 of some of the best back to back days of skiing ever for me! Heading home tomorrow and I'm actually looking forward to the rest. :)

If you want to hit Fall Line, you hike up the hill next to the unloading area for the single that goes over the Stark's Nest.

There's also a sign for it off of Chute. It started out as a narrow trail that just sort of ended....

I have never bothered skiing down to the sign off Chute but I am familiar with the territory you ended up skiing. Definitely best to hike around Stark's Nest for Fall Line, one of my favorite non-tree trails at MRG along with Lower Antelope. No Paradise, though? I expect to see that on your next year's MRG report :D

The single just looks goofy.

Great pics. I want to hit MRG this season before they mess with the single. But with my skill level I really won't be able to enjoy the entire mountain. Probably wouldn't be able to enjoy the entire mountain for a few years. lol.

You have to go through the trees more to the left to access the trail called Fall Line. Those tighter trees you skied were one of the places I found alot of untracked snow in. As you did too.

One of the best things about spending 4 days there was that I've finally gotten a handle on the layout of the place and where things are and how to get from one place to the next.

you tried to enter fall line the same area I did a few weeks back and finally ended hiking up and out when I came 4' drop that had no apparent openings thru the trees below - I left certainly feeling contrite - an expert's mountain for sure!

Okay, now your scaring me....LOL. Never skied there before. My daughter and husband has and says it's a blast. Not sure if I could handle the trees, maybe some other stuff, if it's got good snow coverage, otherwise I wouldn't want to try it.

Looks like you have a lot of fun though.

If you can ski bumps, you're fine. I was actually surprised that the moguls were pretty manageable and not Volkswagen huge. Probably a result of limited skier traffic. That may change after this weekend. Any decent bump skier can handle the trails I skied at MRG. The lightly gladed trails like Upper Glades and Lynx are a blast and the trees are very easily navigable.

I am not sure of your skill level, but there are groomed trails coming down from every lift. You may not be able to explore the whole mountain but you will have a great day. There are beginner trails coming down for the sunny side double and off the single upper antalope and catamount are usually groomed then you can cut across to the other side of the mountain.

Thanks for the info. I probably fall somewhere in the higher ranges of intermediate. I can handle some mellow bumps and will get tossed around in some of the bigger ones. I'm willing to give anything a try.

Be careful with that statement when talking about MRG.... ;)

Trust me, I know that if I went I would be skiing mostly groomers. I wouldn't be able to hit any of the big name stuff. My goal really is to ride the single before next season.

Not to worry- as scary as it sounds there is terrain for everyone and all the trails dump into the same base area so you can't lose anyone. They will eventually pop out at the bottom. Even this noski has done a run at MRG and didn't even fall.
