Date(s) Skied: Thursday, 3/8/2007, 9:15 am - 1:45 pm
Resort or Ski Area: Mad River Glen, Vermont
Conditions: Crud, powder, packed powder. Light misty snow early, clearing around noon, sunny after noon. Cold (single digits), Breezy.
Trip Report: Well, it's been over two years, but I finally got back to Mad River Glen today. I need to make it a point to hit MRG at least once per season. You can spend days exploring this place. The goal today was to ski some more of the steeper stuff off the single as last time we mostly cruised to mid station and then hit the diamonds at the lower elevations.
My buddy Joe and I took our first run as a warm-up on Antelope-Catamount-Broadway-Bunny. My knee was screaming and I felt an overall feeling of sluggishness from skiing the past 3 days at Sugarbush. We figured the next run was time to hit the diamonds and we started on Catamount Bowl. Nice bumps on an initial steep pitch which quickly mellows. We cruised over to Lynx. Awesome trail! Lightly gladed with many interesting terrain features. Good snow with cruddy bumps.
Joe was having goggle visibility issues so he went in to work that out so I rode to mid-station and hit Upper and Lower Glades. Another awesome lightly gladed run. A bit steeper than Lynx with similar surface. The next run Joe and I hit Chute and then the Glades.
We then tried to ski Fall Line but I guess didn't ski left enough off the entrance from Chute and wound up in some tight (for us) glades. Tons and tons of powder, much of it untracked, but we followed other skier track making for manageable skiing. I wish I skied trees and powder better but it was still a fun adventure. We emerged somewhere near midstation.
Hit Chute again and tried to find another nicely spaced tree skiing we spotted left of Upper Glades, but ended up in more tight trees. Following other skier tracks was a blast today, but it held us up a bit. Still had fun on these little excursions playing around in the powdery woods. Came across a couple really cool chutes (frozen stream beds?). We really had a blast cutting through little wooded areas to connect trails.
Really wish we had someone with us that knew the place well (Eric - we were looking for you in that white jacket you're so self-conscience about... :lol. I've still probably only skied 1/4 of all the trails at MRG after my two short visits. I can see why JimG. wanted to give this place several back to back days to check it out. The day started with low visibility and misty snow (my first visit was during a snowstorm) so I was glad to see the sun come out today to get a better feel for the overall layout.
The place is certainly an expert's dream. Based on the of the skiing I saw today, I feel like an intermediate skier. My knee felt better after 90 minutes or so and I did push myself a bit taking small chutes and drops as well as some of the tightest tree lines I've ever skied, but some of the stuff I saw other skiers hit with ease was impressive. The place makes you want to explore! Also cool to ride the original single during its last year of operation. Great times!
With that, my visit to the MRV is over and I enjoyed 4 of some of the best back to back days of skiing ever for me! Heading home tomorrow and I'm actually looking forward to the rest.
