magic

they say saturday @ noon...

hopefully with the snow they can get things going for the holidays....

"The obvious question on everyone's mind is when is Magic going to open?? The short answer is as soon as possible. Mother Nature seems to be game for helping us out over the next couple of days and we are finally going to be blowing snow this afternoon. It has been a long tough road, but our goal is right around the corner.

As of today we are going to leave it like this. Assuming, and this is a big assumption, we get 10-14" of snow Friday afternoon into Saturday as some forecasts have indicated we are going to plan on opening at noon on Saturday. A delayed opening will enable us do some groomer work with the new snow and fix any problem spots. If we do get open on Saturday please note that conditions will be thin and variable mountain wide. While it may look like a winter wonderland, everyone will need to be aware that all of the new snow has fallen on essentially little to no base. Bringing out your brand new skis probably won't be a good idea.

If we don't get open on Saturday we will open as soon as possible thereafter. We are in for another possible helping of snow from the heavens on Sunday and the snow making system will be running non stop as temperatures permit.

We are very sorry for the ambiguity as to the opening date, but with the goal of opening as soon as possible this is the best we can offer. As always, stay tuned to www.magicmtn.com for details."

Too bad things are up in the air. I was debating a run at Magic but is seems like this snow is falling on no base. I really wouldn't care about the warning about no base (heck, I would welcome it as it would scare many skiers away!) but go time is 6am at the latest so I can't wait for them to make the call.

The powers on, the pumps are running, the lift's inspected. It won't be long. A dedicated few are working long hours to get things going. It won't be long.

dj spookman skinned it today. Still thin, just getting the guns set up. Sounded unlikely for tomorrow, but soon.

riv: I'll have a pass again this year so drop me a line when you hit magic.

Yup, thin cover is right! Only natural up there right now, but it was dumping when I left at 3. They packed the snow down though, and have the guns setup and are running more lines to get ready.

I didn't hit too many submerged rocks, but they were definitely there. With this fresh snow, it may even be a little better. If I had the time, i'd be up there tomorrow for sure! Pics and report to come later.

Magic is reporting 7 inches from this storm. This is not enough snow for them to open however. Hopefully, they'll get slammed by Sunday's storm & open up on Monday.

Magic is frustrating as far as when they open for the season due to their lack of snowmaking & they don't get the kind of natural snowfall that MRG does. Once it does open & there's enough snow, it's a great mountain on a powder day. Just gotta be patient.
